        Re: Europa Universalis IV

It's pretty clear I have no clue what the hell I'm doing yet.

I re-started France 4 times and failed in a new way each go-around. I thought I was finally getting the hang of it in my last try. But I didn't tend to the areas I had taken over, was in a state of war for too long, and my army got weakened trying to put out rebellions in newly taken provinces. Within the space of a month, two new strong rebel uprisings popped up, and a coalition of just about everyone declared war on me. I was doomed, so I threw in the towel again.

Another hilarious failure (attempt 3) was when I decided it would be a good idea to try and declare war on Burgundy when I hadn't finished up with England quite yet.

Learning the hard way, but still having a lot of fun.

        EDIT:

The thing that I need to adjust to the most is the concept of how to manage my army. I'm used to the Civilization series (specifically II-III, and IV to a much lesser extent) where you are managing a bunch of single units and need to have units in all your cities. In my last attempt, I went with the strategy of having two large units each with a leader who could handle just about anything England could throw at me. I was able to then split both of those into two smaller units and conduct sieges on the initial 4 provinces I wanted simulatneously.

Anyone have tips for managing ground units? Where should I station them when I'm not at war?

          Re: Europa Universalis IV

I station my army in provinces that can handle the unit stack with supplies. when you have the army selected and can hover the mouse pointer over any province and it'll tell you what the supply limits are. if it red, that mean you'll get attrition(basically not enough food to feed your troops so some will die). yellow means it's ok, green mean you have room for more.

I believe supply limit can change in winter months as well, so keep an eye out for that.

In my current game, I have 3 stacks of 24 units. most of my own provinces can handle that. when at war, I usually try to go after their units first, ideally by making the AI attack one of my stacks, then I can reinforce it with my other stacks. If I can get most of their troops, I'll start splitting the stacks to siege faster. but that all depends on how many troops they have, and whether or not they have allies.

1605AD with my Commonwealth game. Crimea allied with Ottomans again, and Crimea then declared war on me. I managed to defend my land really well, even took a couple of provinces away from Crimea to get the war score fairly high in my favor. I used that war score to slim down Ottomans some by making then return of the their lands to countries that had cores on land they had.

It didn't last too long, as Ottomans declared war on those nation right away and got the back, but at least it made them have to take them back using gold, manpower, and likely more aggressive expansion points making their neighbors hate them some more.

once that truce ended, I decided to attack Crimea. I was hoping that with the war the ottomans were in against half of Europe and middle east(seriously, they were at war with like 20 nations in a single war because they were all in a coalition against Ottomans), that I would be able to focus on Crimea and drive up the war score.

That strategy worked out in the end, my troops can destroy Crimea as Crimea's tech level is very low. Ottomans is the same as me on tech level. Sweden and Spain I believe are the only countries who are higher. I took the 2 most south eastern provinces.

Muscovy extends all the way to china. They have been busy, luckily not with me.

England conquered all of Scotland, Ireland and nearly 1/3 of France, then rebelled and lost most of it. Spain is eating up some of the minor French nations.

Milan and Naples fighting for control of Italy.

on the Religious situation, Commonwealth, Livonian Order, Bohemia, and Brandenburg are the Protestant nations. I believe Great Britain went back to Catholic, and I think Scotland is the only Reformed nation. All of the Commenwealth lands are Protestant except the 2 I have just taken from Crimea.

Not that it really means much in EUIV, Brandenburg and 2 other small nations actually have their leaders of the same dynasty of The Commonwealth.

              Question about trade.

My big trade node where I'm collecting trade is B. Do I want to send a merchant to "Transfer Trade Power" to A or C??

If you are collecting from B, you'll want to transfer from A. you can't transfer against the "flow", if that makes sense.

stuck in another large war that'll be hard to get out of. me and Brandenburg versus, Crimea, Ottomans, Golden Horde, Muscovy, Sibr, and Qara Qoyunla. man these coalitions are really annoying. all this because Crimea declared war on me yet again, and I had pretty good relations with Muscovy, but that doesn't matter.

Edit: Luckily I was able to win just about every battle so even though they occupied nearly half my land, I had more warscore which allowed me to peace out and even force Crimea to break alliance with Ottomans. hopefully that will last until the truce end so I can beat up Crimea by themselves to teach them a lessen. but my manpower went from nearly 130K down to 10K. so it'll be awhile before I can do some warfare.

1630AD. As planned, I attacked Crimea in hopes to cut them down to a smaller size. attacked them until I had 100% warscore, took 1 privince, then forced them to release several nations effectively cutting them down by nearly 2/3. they are now getting hit hard by rebels.

not all good news for me though, as you can see Russia is form and they now have claims on a bunch of my land. Also my heir died a dew years ago, and now my king died forcing a personal union with Brandenburg, with me as the lesser partner. luckily if it comes down to it I should be easily able to break free by military force. Also, apparently it's impossible for the AI to intergrate a human contolled nation in a personal union, so there is no fear of a game over, however, since I am the lesser partner I can no longer rage war on my own and I'll likely be dragged into a bunch of wars as Brandenburg has been going to war often lately.

                      Re: Europa Universalis IV

Still making some hilarious blunders, but I'm to about 1510 and have managed to get almost all my French cores under control. Just annexing the sourthernmost provence near the Iberian peninsula for the final piece. I also wiped Brittany off the map because they insulted me to give me a reason. All their former provinces are now cored as well.

My first forays into colonization were a comedy of errors. First, I learned the hard way about sea attrition. There went a stack of three ships halway across the Atlantic. I didn't realize the concept of colonial reach at the time either. So I probably wouldn't have been able to colonize over there anyway.

Next, I sent a new explorer down the African coast, and set up a colony in the furthest spot I was allowed. Which happened to be Ivory Coast. First attempt I didn't realize that a native uprising without military there meant no more colony. That happened shortly after I started out. Attempt number two was successful. This time I brought a stack of 3 infantry to camp there. Lucky guess - that was about the size of stack I needed to comfortably fend off the larger, but less advanced bands that were thrown at me.

Reformation is happening across some of my provinces, but I can't seem to do anything about it. My missionary isn't good enough to flip any of them back. I'm just letting it go for now, but I'm sure that's going to become a problem soon.

I think I'm actually going to be done with this save. I don't want to get too much into a late game until I fully understand all the mechanics and how to properly plan my ideas and tech. I really don't like the first idea group that I picked, and didn't really understand the give and take of how to spend my monarch points until later on.

I think tonight I'm going to start up with Portugal to really learn the colony, diplomacy, and naval side of things. I will definitely miss marching around with my two deathstacks of army with little to no manpower or attrition worries. That covered up for a lot of my mistakes to be sure.

After I'm a few hours in with that save, I think I'm going to go for my first attempt at a full game in Ironman mode. This is a great game!
