Thank god someone mentioned Chrono Trigger. I was a little too young to have played it when it first came out, but I recently downloaded an emulator and played through it. Easily one of my favorite RPGs all things considered. All the different endings, the pretty interesting story, the tech system (which I really fell in love with,) not to mention the side quests that are directly impacting the world around you

Re: Games that must be experienced.
The game that immediately came to mind for me was...
Original Asheron's Call, pre expansions - No loading screens running around the world, in depth lore, and an amazing community. I have never come across a community like the original AC community in a game since. The thrill of traveling to a high level area, with monsters in tow, chasing after you, is still one of my favorite gaming memories.
Sure, other big MMO's were out at the time, but it's the one game I can remember almost lobbying people about.
Some others:
Timesplitters: Future Perfect (great sense of humor, great multiplayer)
Mass Effect 2 (characters, characters, characters)
Ocarina of Time (getting and playing this a kid when it came out, wow..)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (most memorable ladder, ever)
Banjo Kazooie(Jinjonator)
Zone of the Enders(I haven't played a "mech" game with that smooth of combat since)
My list would be
Dragon Age Origins
Mass Effect Series
One of the Sims games, cant tell you how much fun it was to trap a Sim in a burning building by removing the door
Psychonauts
Sleeping Dogs
GTA (my vote goes for Vice City, San Andreas and 5)
Old Tomb Raider games
TOE JAM and Freaking Earl
Earthworm Jim (do not play the 3d one)
Bioshock
Deus Ex
Half Life 2
Portal
Star Wars Battlefront
Jade Empire, very underrated Bioware game IMO
Elder Scrolls/Fallout
Star Wars KOTOR's, probably my favorite two games of all time
Civilization
A Paradox game (EU4 or Ck2)
Rome 1 Total war/Medieval 2
Metal Gear Series
Last of Us
Uncharteds
Red Dead Redemption
Legend of Zeldas
Ogre Battle 64: Loved this game as a kid, had no idea what was going on most of the time but loved it

Went to XBOX Marketplace to play Ninja Gaiden Black, forgot how challenging, difficult, throw the wireless controller against the wall hard that game was.
Also Knights of the Old Republic is awesome, recently bought that and the KOTOR 2 for PC.My teams: Cowboys, Knicks, Braves, Arsenal FC, Nittany Lions

Re: Games that must be experienced.
A lot of great ones mentioned. Definitely want to echo The Last of Us, Uncharted series, KOTOR (only the first one), NFL 2K5, Red Dead, and Castlevania: SotN
My personal favorites also include Syphon Filter 1 and 2; truly underrated games that never really got out of the shadow of Metal Gear Solid. Dark Mirror was outstanding, also.
GTA3. It was groundbreaking and way ahead of its time. A transcendent game.
Skyrim. Whereas Oblivion is certainly massive and engaging, nothing comes close to this in terms of life-sucking, hours-draining fun. My better half has spent approximately two hundred some hours of her life on this game and counting. The Last of Us is the Citizen Kane of video-games. It is better than every game that has ever come before it, and is the new benchmark for all games to follow. It is nothing short of a work of art.Comment

Re: Games that must be experienced.
Too many to mention, but IMO, Naughty Dog is the top producer of games that must be "experienced". No, the gameplay mechanics aren't perfect in UC 1-3 or TLOU, but the combination of graphics, cinematics, voice acting, and gameplay are second to none.
If you were to ask me to pick only one game to experience on current gen consoles, it would be The Last Of Us.Comment

Re: Games that must be experienced.
Here are my list of games you must experience..
E.T. for Atari 2600
Superman 64 for N64
NBA Live 07 for PS2/3 & 360
Elite 11 demo for PS3 & 360
I had the horror of being QA for Live 07, had to play full game to see just how much Halloween made it to retail.NBA Live is the epitome of Cancel Culture..
