So if I don't have enemy unknown, should I just get this game? Looks like I can get it new for about $28. Or I can get Enemy Unknown for $15.

Just get Enemy Within. It is pretty much the original game with all the DLC and a handful of different missions and enemies.Comment

It's worth every penny. 10 easily. I wish they'd release mod tools, so modders could make some new maps or mission types.Comment

Re: Xcom: Enemy Within
I would give it a solid 8.5
That is only because of 2 reasons:
1. 98% of the missions are similar to Enemy Unknown, they are just have different maps. It would have been nice if they even TRIED to make the story line different or at least make your HQs look different or a different staff at least.
2. Save files get corrupted randomly. Had the same problem with Unknown.
But other then that, you can easily spend 10 hours straight playing this game and not realize it. Pretty emotional game though, because you develop a bond with your troops and to have one die on you after 2 dozen missions is a huge buzz kill.
So definitely pay attention to the WHOLE map and plan your attack carefully. The enemies in this game are no joke.Comment

Re: Xcom: Enemy Within
The game came in the mail today. I am playing on default level and its pretty hard. Just learning the game. The tactical portion is sweet. I don't have a clue what I am doing in the other portions of the game. I just had a whole squad whiped out.
Anyone have any pointers on what I should be doing in regard to research, mission control, etc.

The game is hard to put down.
Far as missions, I usually like to spread my squad out during combat. Missions will get easier once you get to bring 6 people in your squad. Snipers should always be left in the back, no where near the front line. Heavies and assault should be the front line of attack, with support bring up the flanks but not too far forward.
A rude diagram of my attack plan:
----------------------A-------H--------A--------------------------------
------------SU------------------------------------SU
------------------------------SNIPER-----------------------------------
Sometimes I roll with 2 heavies instead of 2 supports. Just depends on who is healthy and good at the time. I would even roll with 2 snipers if both have squad sight ability.
But anyway, snipers always in the back, support on the flanks but in the middle. You want them close enough to the front that they can actual shoot somebody, but not close enough to the point they get the brunt of the attack from the enemy. Besides you don't want the guy who is carrying health packs to be killed.
When it comes to clearing buildings, I usually let my assault people do that, since they have better reflexes and better aim. Also when ever you move, always leave one or two people on over watch. Don't move everybody on the same turn.
Learn how to retreat. Seriously, if you got flanked, fall back. People die quickly when they are fully exposed in this game. Especially if it was a floater that flanked you. I refer to floaters as squad member killers. Take them out ASAP.Comment

Research weapons 1st for you can get laser weapons as soon as possible. Then work on your armor. Far as officer school, unlock squad size increases as fast as possible.

Re: Xcom: Enemy Within
The without getting killed part is the trickiest part.
Far as building, Uplinks and power plants for you can constantly launch 3 satellites every month. You need countries for income. So I usually cover the countries who give out the most money every month first.
More money you bring in, the more stuff you can work on at the same time.
The game for the most part guides in what you SHOULD be researching. Keyword being should. I don't follow it to the letter and venture off doing my own thing for I can be better prepared.
You can stall researching priority things. Which I would recommend. First time I played Xcom, I did everything they recommended and ended up being slaughter because the game advanced faster then my squad can handle. Before I knew it, I was facing dudes with plasma weapons and I still had bullets.
So definitely stall on the priority stuff, because basically priority stuff are markers in the game for how damn hard the missions will start to get after you researched priority stuff. So pace yourself.
By the time you get to capturing aliens, you will want to have laser weapons.
By the time the second priority thing comes around, you want to have light plasma weapons and carpace armor.
By the time another priority thing comes around, you want to have regular plasma weapons and be on you way to getting titan armor.
FYI, be sure to uprade your pistols as well. They will come in handy when you start having those prolonged firefights with 20 plus enemies and you find yourself in a spot where using a turn to reload can cost you your life. Switch to pistol instead.Comment

Research arc thrower......build an arch thrower, build a containment room. Then you simply need to get close to enemy and use the arc thrower on them without getting killed in the process,

I'm going to start a new game now that I know whats going on a little more.
On a side note, I really wish they would make this type of game for WWII and Modern Warfare. I'd love to take a squad of 12 WWII soldiers on a raid with this. There was a game like this way back for the Commodore 64 called computer ambush, but you had to manually type in everything you wanted your soldiers to do.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

There is one called Legends of War: Patton. 360/PS3/PC, A turn Based game too. Not as good as Xcom but I also love WWII games and this isn't bad. You can pick it up cheap, I got mine from GameFly for $9.

Re: Xcom: Enemy Within
Back to Xcom, I restarted a new game. Lost my sniper in France, but everything was still going along well. Then a saucer crashes in Florida and my squad got completely whiped out again.
My fatal error was going for the meld. Then my squad misseed some easy shots, got outflanked and it was over. How important is meld?
Now I just have basically a couple squaddies and rookies left and there is major panic in Europe and I am being asked to go to madrid on some really difficult mission. Can I ignore the request? Do you ever ignore the requests? Theses guys need some seasoning before they tackle anything difficult. Or do you just put them in the grinder?Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment
