If you have a GameCube, you can just get the Game Boy Player accessory for around $25. It's much more enjoyable playing GBA games on a TV than on a small screen.

Heck, you could probably get a GameCube and Game Boy Player for $50, which is half the price of a Game Boy Advance SP.

Don't have a GC. Thought about going that route, though. Does GameStop still carry the used consoles?

They don't around where I live. You may have to go the eBay route if you want one.

I know there is a store around here called Play 'N(and?) Trade, that still stocks old consoles/games, might be a place to check. I used to scour the big bins for old PS1/N64 games, but Gamestop seems to have phased everything older out.

Most of my retro gaming is done on PC though, since emulators can do a fantastic job of rendering games at a much higher resolution and then downscaling that and making everything look super crisp (especially when it comes to PS2-era graphics.)

You don't think it loses anything when looking that crisp? I think I prefer the lack of crispness my CRT TV offers on older games.

So I am holding out trying to find a cheaper copy of Shenmue for the DC. Not sure I want to spend $30 to get it sent to my house.

Nah... I'm an admitted graphics whore though.

I booted up a random game I have here (happened to be THUG 2) and took a screen cap. I don't think it loses anything.

I still have my PS1, PS2 and Dreamcast readily available to play.

I can't tell you the excitement when cleaning out an old cabinet I found Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Xenosaga, Blue Stinger, Lodoss War and Castlevania: SOTN looking me in my face.

RGB is the way to go if you want to get the best graphics out of your old systems.

The Dreamcast/PS2/GameCube/Xbox era is where VGA and component became the best video option. And now HDMI is best for today's systems.

But any system prior to those is going to look best in RGB.

To get RGB out of the N64 and NES, you need to solder red-green-blue cables to the motherboard.

For all the other old systems, all you have to do is plug in a normal RGB cable and connect it to a compatible monitor like the Sony PVM.

I got a Sony PVM off eBay a few years ago for $50, and it has made my old games look a ton better.

Check out this website for more info:

This section will show you the best way to get RGB from each system, as well as which versions of each system outputs the best quality!  Some systems only require an RGB cable and others require modifications, but I've broken each section down to show the best option for your setup. I can vouch for the Dreamcast VGA cable....it's totally money.

One thing I realized I really like about the DC and Sega games is the color palletes they used - they're so bright and brilliant to look at. Even now, a game like Crazy Taxi with the overly-blue skies and bright yellows and greens is just flat-out pretty to look at. It's like the better the graphics got on games, the less 'fun' the color pallates became...

Back then they weren't worried about bragging about "realism".

Now it's all about "HEY GUYS CHECK OUT HOW REALISTIX WE ARE HUEHUEHUE!"

It's the same debate MMO players have been going on about for years and years. Everyone wants MMOs to be as close to photo-realistic as possible. "stylized" games age much much better than "realistic" games.

See: WoW-graphics vs. EQ2-graphics. EQ2 looked great for when it came out. Now? Not so much. You can tell it's almost 10 years old. WoW still stands the test of time - as in it doesn't look as dated. You can tell it's older, but it doesn't lose any of the impressiveness it had at the time because it's stylized and has a strong sense of art direction.

It's not the thread for it, so I'll stop there... but just know I could type multiple-page essays on graphics and the negative effects they are having as we move forward in the industry (not that they are bad in and of themselves, just the cause/effect relationship we are seeing nowadays.)

Wife surprised me with this today for Christmas. So excited to have this. A lot of great games built in, and now the hunt for Tecmo Super Bowl, NHL 94, NBA Jam and a few other games begins. The controllers are wireless, too, which is great.

The best example I can think of a stylized game that still looks good today is LoZ: Wind Waker. Even without its Wii U facelift I still love the way that game looked on the Gamecube. I wish Squenix would bring that back to the FF series if only for one game (like IX), but at least Bravely Default seems to adopt that approach.
