    Re: Splatoon

    First update coming tonight:

Splatoon Gets New Mode, Map, and NES Zapper

Nintendo announced today that Splat Zones, a ranked battle mode, would unlock June 1 at 7 PM PT, along with a new map and weapon.

Back in March, Nintendo announced its plans for Ranked multiplayer in Splatoon, citing that the mode would unlock once enough players reached level 10. In Splat Zones, players battle over control of a single piece of turf on the map for a set amount of time. A team that holds the zone and burns down the control timer to zero is declared the winner.

Starting tonight players will be able to unlock the N-ZAP85, a tribute to the light gun peripheral called the Zapper for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo describes the N-ZAP85 as a "rapid-fire shooter with some impressive ink efficiency." It comes with a Splat Bombs and an Echo-locator special weapon.

The free map, called Port Mackerel, is set on a dock and it will unlock tonight at the same time.

Nice to see this is not paid DLC. Looking forward to getting on tonight.

Anyone know if you can play this just on the pad like MK, Mario World, etc?

There's no off-TV or splitscreen online support like Mario Kart 8, due to the way the game is designed and the gamepad displaying information.

Damn. Oh well. Thought I'd ask. Got used to being able to play on the pad while my wife watched her shows on the tv.

Is it just me, or does it take forever to level up? I'm sitting at 7 right now, and can only seem to get a level a night with the time I have.

            Do I suck that bad?

              Re: Splatoon

I'm a level 8 and it doesn't seem slow to me. I'm not playing for hours on end either. With matches being only 3 minutes each, it's perfect for short-bursts. The level cap is 20 and it appears a bunch have already hit that. The games I get the most points in are the ones when I use the Splattershot Jr. This game is all about ink coverage and while the Splat Roller would seem to be the obvious weapon of choice, I feel people have largely figured out how to deal with them. The Splattershot Jr's shield special increases survivability to allow you to keep on inking.

I like how you're barely rewarded in terms of points for kills. Sure, they still matter to a degree, but their barely surfaced both during and after games. There's nowhere to even view a bunch of statistics like K/D ratio, which I love because I'm firm believer that stuff promotes bad habits in objective-based multiplayer. Also think it leads to discouraging some people because they feel their not good enough. The goal in Turf War is so simple, clear, and doesn't require you to be the most dextrous player to feel like you're helping the team.

I certainly have some gripes with the game, but I honestly feel this is the first competitive shooter to have something different mechanically to say since TF2. If Splatoon is representative of what to expect from Nintendo when they step outside their comfort zone, they should do it more often.

                Re: Splatoon

I agree about the Splattershot Jr. I'm only level 5, but I've barely used any of the other weapons. Most games I'll finish in 1st or 2nd on my team with over 1000 points. I usually rush towards middle as soon as possible, and by that time I have enough ink coverage to use my shield ability, which helps me kill anyone contesting the middle area. I've heard good things about the Aerospray so that will be my next weapon to unlock and try out.

Just been playing in short 30-60 minute bursts each night. I feel like that's the right amount of time to play given the 2 map rotation at a time.

I'm sitting at level 4, but I didn't play at all yesterday and have only played a handful of matches. I feel like the 3 min time limit is prefect for this type of game. Love there isn't K/D ratio either so guys aren't just sprinting to the middle and trying to kill (splatter) people.

If they had some type of voice chat it would really make a world of difference in terms of knowing what your teammates are doing.

My wife and I have played a few rounds of 1vs1 battles, it's a nice change of pace. it would be nice if you could play that way online too. Maybe S2 will have it.

I just hope in the update they make it easier to switch out weapons between rounds.

                      New map coming tonight

A new stage, Kelp Dome, will be added to Splatoon today at 7 PM PT! Viewed from above, this stage takes the shape of a nearly perfect square. You can either make your way to the center by circling around the perimeter of the dome, or you can take the high road on the grated catwalks to get straight into the action. The boundaries of the dome and the inner, maze-like structure of the facility are covered in ink-resistant glass.

No wonder I see so many Japanese players, Splatoon is doing very well in Japan.

Splatoon is Still Number One in Japan as Wii U Sales Increase Again

The Japanese Media Create chart results are in, and much focus has been on Splatoon and Wii U; after an excellent debut for the shooter, it's momentum has been key.

The numbers that have come through seem rather positive, too, especially for a new IP. In its second week the Wii U exclusive sold 68,913 copies in Japan, taking its total from two weeks to 213,731.
Splatoon Did Great In Japan, And So Did The Splatoon Amiibo Figures

Japanese sales tracker Media Create reveals that Splatoon sold through 97.33% of its shipment, and that most stores ran out of stock on the very day of its launch. Despite the shooter genre having a limited userbase in Japan, Nintendo’s commercials for the game and their Global Testfire demos helped spread awareness of the title.

Meanwhile, the three Splatoon Amiibo figurines that were released alongside the game also performed very well. Media Create says that the Splatoon figurines sold through 90% of their shipment (with total sales of 106,000 Amiibo across all types, counting the triple-set as three Amiibo sales).

                          New mode out tonight

on 7/1 at 7 PM PT, a new Ranked Battle will be added to the game! This new mode is called Tower Control. Hop aboard the tower placed in the middle of the map, and ride it to your opponent’s goal. stay sharp—you’ll have to protect whoever’s riding the tower from enemy attacks!
Once someone jumps onto the tower, it starts moving along a set path toward the other team’s goal. If the tower doesn’t arrive at either goal before time runs out, the team that’s moved it closest toward their opponent’s goal wins. Ride the tower all the way into the other team’s goal though, and you’ll get a decisive knockout victory.

I played through the story mode last night as I've mostly been playing online. It's fairly quick to get through (4-5 hours I'd assume) but very enjoyable.

That final boss fight is great though. One of the best ones I've ever seen in a shooter.
