Re: The Last of Us: Remastered
So this morning I finished the game around 5am. It was one of those deals where I told myself "after this next encounter I gotta go to bed" over and over again until I basically couldn't put the game down as I neared the end, I was too captivated.
Random question, is there a way to tell how long I played the game so far? It means nothing and really isn't important, I was just curious. If I had to estimate I would guess somewhere between 14-16 hours.
As far as spoiler free thoughts:
SpoilerEasily one of the best games I have ever played. I put it above the God of War and Uncharted games, which I LOVE, and right up there with the first Starcraft, FF7, Castlevania:SOTN, Half-Life 2, it's definitely right there on that personal list.
A friend told me this game is half Resident Evil, half Uncharted. I am not sure I agree with that, I think it is it's own type of game, it's own beast, it's on genre even. It's not a game about horror or trying to scare you or even a game about trying to be as epic an adventure as you will ever find, but both those things happen naturally, without being force fed down your throat. It's just a really stunning achievement as far as a videogame story telling and delivery.
If I had to give it a rating, and this is obviously based on just the main story, I haven't touch multi-player or Left Behind, I would give it a 9.7 out of 10. The positives are pretty obvious. I have to list any sort of "issues" I had, it's basically just two, maybe three, and they are mostly minor and nitpicky.
A.) I don't like how Naughty Dog handles enemy spawning/scaling up difficulty. This isn't really a TLOU issue, it is just with all their games, IMO. I understand I picked Hard mode, and I am sure it is even worse on Grounded, but still, there are better ways to make the game more difficult than just have enemies seemingly appear out of nowhere, sometimes in an almost impossible location. Once or twice I made sure to back myself into a safe spot where there was no entrance or any sort behind me and I could easily see everything going on and still, somehow, I managed to get jumped from behind. I feel like this is something they do in all the Uncharted games as well, instead of making it more of an "organic" difficulty they just throw hordes and hordes of enemies at you who can spot you from a mile away. I would rather keep the encounters more intimate and tense, but just give the enemies better A.I. and more tactics/weapons at their disposal as well as make the users weapons weaker and less accurate, keeping encounters equally as tense, more intimate, and strategic. Again, this is just me nit picking. It just kills the immersion a little bit when I am thinking "there is no way that many guys would be coming out of there." Someone in the other thread recommended us first timers playing on normal or easy the first time through, and honestly I kind of agree with that now. I would get out of touch with the story or the purpose at some points (one segment I died so often by the time I made it through I had to be reminded why I was even trying to get past this area in the first place) because all I was thinking about was how I was going to navigate this difficult area.
B.) I really wish the companions you play with throughout the game were a little more helpful. If I am going to have to sneak around or go head to head with dozens of bad guys it would be nice if my friends did something once on awhile. I am not sure if the companion AI was tweaked at all for this release, but while I wouldn't say it is terrible, it leaves a little to be desired. It would have been nice if I could have given them commands and been really strategic, like "Create a diversion over there" or something like that.
C.) The encounters, in my humble opinion, OCCASIONALLY feel a little repetitive. They mix it up sometimes, which is great, but I wouldn't have minded a little more variety.
That's really all I can say, and I love to complain, so I think that is really impressive. Neither of those are really that big of a deal, just minor personal gripes.
The good: I mean, I think everyone in this thread knows. This game is definitely a masterpiece. There are times when I am inching around areas in PURE suspense, the tension feels REAL, I can't explain it without sounding like too big of a dork, but I just feel like you can see Naughty Dog's intricate hand crafted artwork in all areas, from the textures to the sounds of the environment, it is all just next level amazing. It is also one of the prettiest console games I have ever played. Honestly, I haven't played the MGS release on PS4 yet as I was waiting for a 10 dollar special sale on it (heard it is really short) but as I was playing this game there were times where I felt "this looks better than Second Son" or "this looks better than Killzone." I am not sure what game has the current Graphics Champion Crown for PS4 but this has to be up there, maybe it is just me. It's also one of those special games that makes me care about the characters, which is getting harder and harder for games to do for me. At first I kind of didn't like Ellie that much, but around the middle of the game she really grew on me and by the end she had totally won me over.
Some SPOILER thoughts:
SpoilerI think I probably need to read through the PS3 version thread and see everyone's thoughts from back when the game first came out. I find myself kind of torn on the story. By torn, I don't mean if I like it or not, I mean, who do I feel was right, who do I feel was wrong, etc. I think the ending presents some interested questions and portrays a situation that is up for your own personal interpretation. Technically, one could say, if they wanted to, that Joel did what felt right but really, in the grand scheme, was wrong. I can't tell for sure but it seems like Ellie truly was fine with sacrificing herself. Is taking that away from her, taking away a possible cure from mankind, is that selfish? It's a tough situation and a moral dilemma. I don't know how I feel, I have been thinking about it and I just can't make up my mind.
I definitely didn't see that going down the way it did. You know how when you watch a TV series, or a good movie, or read a good book, you naturally kind of make predictions in your head and try to figure out what is going to happen based on clues or whatever you have been shown so far? I definitely didn't think that the Fireflies would turn into a "Bad guy" type crew (although, like I just asked, are they really bad?). My guess was that we were gonna meet up with them, they were gonna run tests on Ellie and progress would be made from using her blood samples kind of deal, but something would happen like an accident of some sort and a breakout of infected would occur inside the Firefly HQ and we would have to escape again and it would kind of have one of those "this is the way the world is now, there is no reversing it" kind of deals.
I don't know what to do now. I guess I should try Grounded out and see if I can hack it, but I sincerely doubt I will be able to. Hard kicked my butt. Maybe I should just do hard but with some things turned off to get the extra challenge without the other enemy boosts that survival or grounded throw at you. I gotta figure out something, because I am gonna enjoy the second play through with photo mode and try to explore every side room I might have missed.
Edit:
Second question, these comic books you pick up throughout the game, am I supposed to be reading them, or reading the back of them anyway? Is this like a Watchmen/Tales of the Black Freighter kind of deal where the comics are a metaphor for the story?Last edited by The JareBear; 08-03-2014, 03:26 AM."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

And a shot of Joel, Tess, and Ellie that I wish had a little more contrast to help them stand out. I can always screw with it but I don't like when people post pics that have been touched up.

Re: The Last of Us: Remastered
Going again through this game is a real joy, so glad that Naughty Dog decided to get this on the PS4. I'm heading towards Bill's safe house right now, he is still one bad *** character. His character model reminds me so much of the Chris Redfield Resident Evil Revelations version.Comment
