I absolutely love the story. There are two parts that really made me cry when playing (one you know for sure, and the other you may be able to think up) because of how well the whole story was crafted to have you engrossed in the characters and their relationships with one another.

Holy f**k!!! That winter episode was hard as hell. That jerk with a machete killed me (Ellie) at least 10 times in that burning restaurant until I got him. That particular sequence was probably the first one I did not enjoy at all. But it was also a wonderful feeling when it was finally over. Definitely got what he deserved. Nice work, Ellie. Oh, and good to see Joel's back...

Yeah, that’s one of the more widely criticized sequences of the game. The restaurant portion, that is... The rest of winter is really well done.

So finally, it's over.

28 hours, 23 minutes.

Freakin' AMAZING from start to finish.

I played on easy, because this was the first game of its kind I have ever played, my hand-eye coordination is not the best in the world and I am no good on the sticks either, so a) I figured I would need all the help I could get and b) I wanted to enjoy the story and the world it's set in as much as possible, thus the setting. I still died some ~150 times fwiw.

I am pre-dominantly a sports gamer, the only other games I played in my life were PC, turn-based strategy games like Age of Wonders and Heroes of Might and Magic from late 90s / early 20s; also played some old Alien vs. Predator games, Shadow Warrior etc., but never anything like Uncharted, RDR, TLoU, Days Gone, Dying Light, Fallout, Skyrim, Witcher... you get the point.

So in this context it might seem silly, but the The Last of Us is BY FAR the single best video game I have EVER played, and it's not close. Everything in this game is simply amazing: the story, characters, graphics, the flow of the game, gameplay, the MUSIC (oh boy, that music, especially in the end, including credits)... just WONDERFUL. 9.5/10 for sure, maybe even more...

Even Left Behind is... phenomenal. I had no idea what to expect or how long it was going to be, but man, it took me whole afternoon, and I freakin' enjoyed every second of it.

where I was able to turn zombies against hunters by throwing bricks or bottles at them from a safe hideout, and watching them kill each other was as much fun as I ever had in this game. More fun was only incarcerating a bloater with a flame thrower in that ECU basement, lol.

Now what I did not like:

Now, it's certainly my fault, because I did not do proper research before buying, but I expected it to be an open world game. Turns out, it's not. The story's pretty linear and I would have welcomed branching storylines which either lead to different outcomes or to the same outcome but taking different ways.

There weren't many, but some of the scripted sequences when you get from cleaning a hard-as-hell area only to run into more trouble, drove me mad. I truly hated them. One of them was the elevator scene in that Pittsburgh hotel (gettin' out of there was... geez, I thought I would never make it, not to mention how creepy it was), and the second one was when David captures Ellie. Here, the branching storylines would've really made a difference.

I would have also welcomed if there were side quests along the main storyline, something where Joel and Ellie would need to use more brains and less weapons, something to reward you with resources or knowledge upon completing a quest. If nothing more, it would make the story longer... and, you know, the story's so good that it can't possibly be long enough.

As for the ending:

As for me, I say f**k mankind, f**k humanity. For all we know, Ellie did not know she was going to die, and we would not know how she would have reacted, so... after all they've been through, while Joel might not be a White Knight, he's certainly kind of an anti-hero for all we know, but he did the right thing saving Ellie because that girl sure as hell DESERVED to live. Joel did the right thing.

As for my Bay Area mate Blzer, I owe you my tips for the scenes that got you:

I'm guessing my other one is #4, based on how you described it.

During the winter, Ellie isn't ever with Joel. You get small bits of controlling Joel, but they don't reunite till after Ellie experiences all that she does. This reuniting moment is incredibly strong for me, especially when Ellie is still in so much angst and doesn't even realize it's him to begin with.

When she unleashes on David and kills him, you're feeling great over the fact that she gets to exact vengeance, but you feel so sad that she has to torment herself over the fact as well, plus what she went to that made her do that in the first place.

This was the first time that Joel calls Ellie "baby girl" (which he calls Sarah in the beginning), and the way that Ellie cracks her voice in saying "Joel" just gets me as he's her father. It also becomes inaudible and you just hear the perfect fitting guitar after that, but if you read Joel's mouth, he says: "I'm never going to leave you again, do you understand?" Finally, their fates are forever sealed together, or hopefully so at least.

Then of course the game has the perfect ending, that makes you think "Ehh maybe not so much?" Love it, and is a perfect set up to Part II.

The giraffes seen screwed up on me. For one, I was hunting around for items to loot while apparently Ellie was there looking at the giraffes and I didn't realize it (the whole time leading up to that she wasn't talking to me like she was estranged, so I didn't really know what was going on), and unlike other games where I saw people be able to put the giraffe, I wasn't able to. If I wasn't busy looting and I could've done that, it would've gotten me much more I think.

I'm getting emotional just typing about it right now.

Couple of more thoughts regarding the "cinematic value" (for the lack of better terms) of the game:

The story and the acting is so good that when thinking about this game as a movie, I would certainly put this into my Top 5 movies of all time. As far as I understand, HBO's going to make it a TV series and honestly, I can't wait, but certainly they have to be pretty careful about whom they're gonna choose to play Joel, and especially Ellie. That decision has the potential to make or break the whole project, because in the game, Ellie's flat-out awesome.

There was a talk earlier in the thread about who should play Joel and Ellie. Aside from actors who actually played both characters in the game, I would go with:

As for Ellie, I would agree with Ellen Page. Maisie Williams, while I love her, not so much. Personally, I just hope they get enough girls for castings to be able to choose the one that best resembles Ellie from the game. It does not have to be a household name and who knows, maybe a new star will be born (aka, wait for it, Maisie in GoT)?

As for Joel, to be honest, when I first learned of this game and watched some gameplay videos (fortunately, I was able to choose some that did not show me much), I would have sworn that Joel is played by Nicolai Coster-Waldau and that was also the reason I originally decided to give this game a try. I was disappointed when I learned Joel's not him, but at the time the game cost like 19.99€ at PS Store and I was like "screw it" and gave it a try. (Definitely glad I did. Best buy EVER.) So NCW would be my #1 choice for Joel.

Ellen is possibly too old now. Yes, she looks younger than most of us would at 33, but if you see her in Flatliners you would start to see the age kicking in a little bit there (and that was three years ago, keep in mind). No longer can she play teenagers and get away with it compared to others in that age range.

More importantly, she also was in a legal feud with Naughty Dog who put too much of her likeness into the game early on (check out the original cover art and E3 announcement trailer), so she's a no-go.

Otherwise, you're right. She would have been the perfect choice, especially when this game first came out.

And I almost missed giraffes as well. But thankfully Ellie wondered about something from upstairs loud enough and long enough for me to get to her in time to see the giraffes, and I was actually able to touch one of them, even have a photo of it, now gracing my profile background on my PS4.
