Re: Spider Man 2 Impressions
My first hour impressions....
I'm sure you've all read about the game, so i'll try to skip the basics.
So far the one thing that stands out more than anything is that Treyarch absolutely nailed the feeling of web-slinging recklessly through the air. They've added a ton of animations (quite a few borrowed from the original movie) like the "arms and legs flailing wildly" thing Parker did the first time he realized he could jump from building to building. Its really immersive.
They also added a nifty charge meter to his jump, which allows you to actually get some major distance on your leaps. Feels great, real spider-like. There's also a sprint button(don't remember if that was in there last time or not)which boosts his running and crawling. When you sprint towards the edge of a building, fully charge the jump, and then launch yourself into space.....man, that sh!t feels fabulous!
The narrator from the last game is still in, with a ton of new material. Its pretty funny. There are these little "hint" thingy's scattered everywhere and they not only give you hints but also "hero points" which you can use for extra stuff. I only bought a speed boost so far, but I'm hoping REEEEEEEEAL hard that there are alternate costumes and heros. I'd love to swing around Manhatten with Daredevil.
The web swinging is a little tricky right now, I havn't gotten the hang of it yet. The fighting also looks to be pretty deep, as on demo mode, they show Spidey doing complex juggles, air-combos, and puch/web chains. Reminds me a little of Marvel vs. Capcom's Spidey. I've only managed basic combos so far, as I've put more time into learning how to swing without smashing myself into the walls.
The map HUD is pretty smooth, too. It looks like a top-down grid, but its really 3d. when you move it you can actually make out the buildings. Its easy to get lost in this huge city.
Graphically, Riddick EfBB has spoiled me to death. This game was obviously designed with the weakling PS2 as the lead console, so the visuals are a little underwhelming. Wheres my normal mapping? Wheres my real-time lighting? Bleh. Its no slouch, but it aint Beyonce-geogeous either. The level of detail that Spidey is animated makes up for the texture or lack therof, though. Plus, the cutscenes use the in-game engine, and they don't look too shabby. The faces are actually modeled pretty well (Doc Oc looks spot-on)
So far I've run into Dr. Curt Conners, and I'm hoping I get to tangle with the Lizard later, but again I just played for about an hour or so and havn't seen any other cameos yet.
Overall, the Spidey animations and the magnitude of the city layout are the real stars of this game. There also seems to be alot of extra content to be found, and I've already found a few hidden icons and side missions. The open-endedness will really remind you alot of GTA, but I'm sure you all already heard that. On a scale of 1-100, I'd give it a solid 86. Nothing groundbreaking, but for the experience of what it feels like to "BE" Spider-man, doing death defying acrobatics 200 feet over busy NY traffic.. this game is awesome.Hank's Custom Collectibles 3D printer/painter extraordinaireComment
