Re: \"Consumers do not want online games\" - Iwata

If I had broadband in my area (I live in the sticks, y'see), I would definitely subscribe to Xbox Live. With broadband usage and availability going up, so will sales and use of online games.

It's unfortunate, but this gen. Nintendo is right. I'd be very suprised to see online play reach 10%. this gen. But Nintendo should have something ready for the next-gen.

I think online gaming is such a mixed bag and over hyped.

I was a beta tester for XBL and played it a lot. However once it launched I didn't play it as much. Playing sports games with strangers is usually pointless cuz they are 13 yr olds who don't know how to play. They set up their 'mismatches' and try to cheese you and you just spank them. During the beta I was undefeated in NBA 2K3. Every game the other guy would take the Mavericks and try to shoot threes with Nash the whole game. I just played fundamentally and won every single game. Then the records reset with launch and I never played again.

Team based military games are very good online. I play them on XBL and PC here and there. Sports games are only good against people you know. I would rather build my dynasty than try to be the top ranked player on XBL.

for the most part you're right about random online games. But if you join a realistic well run league for a sports game with good people and good rules Online extends the life of sports games a ton.

I usually play NCAA football for about 6-8 months after release and then playing the CPU would get old. With 2004 and a couple gresat leagues I'm playing it still today a day before 2005 drops.

The mmorpg market on consoles is weak. EQOA or FFXI. Hoepfully the next generation of consoles expands the market in NA.

as for FPS games ive had a similar experience as with sports random games are cheesers and glitchers unless you get in with a good group of people. Unfortunately most of the best FPS are xbox only titles.

Online is pretty much what you make of it.

yeah that makes sense. The sales of xbox syrocketed after xbox live launched, socom 2 is hitting record numbers every other day now. Splinter Cell pandora tommorrow broke records in sales, while having a mediocre single player mode. Nintendo could not be more wrong on this one. The sad thing is, they could have the potential to get a big piece of the online market if games like SSBM, doulbe dash, mario tennis, animal crossing, and f zero were online

I like sports games online, but I generally prefer playing single player dynasties/franchises. FPS and racing games are greatly improved online. The main Gamecube game I'd want online would be Super Smash Bros. Melee. I want to be able to play against the best to see how good I really am.
