    Re: Doom 3

One annoying problem I forgot to mention is the damage model on the enemies. You shoot a zombie with a shotgun and the guy disappears. I like how the demons disappear into fire but the zombies should have a full damage model. I was wanting a damage model like Soldier of Fortune 2 but no luck...that kinda disappointed me, otherwise its awesome.

yes, it's a way to make it so if one hard drive goes down (dies, has an error, etc), you're not screwed...you set it up where the same data is written on multiple hard drives (there's various ways to set up a raid)...used mostly in corporate environments to protect data

            RAID 0

The lowest designated level of RAID, level 0, is actually not a valid type of RAID. It was given the designation of level 0 because it fails to provide any level of redundancy for the data stored in the array. Thus, if one of the drives fails, all the data is damaged. RAID 0 uses a method called striping. Striping takes a single chunk of data like a graphic image, and spreads that data across multiple drives. The advantage that striping has is in improved performance. Twice the amount of data can be written in a given time frame to the two drives compared to that same data being written to a single drive.

            Advantages:

            Increased storage performance
            No loss in data capacity

            Disadvantages:

            No redundancy of data

RAID version 1 was the first real implementation of RAID. It provides a simple form of redundancy for data through a process called mirroring. This form typically requires two individual drives of similar capacity. One drive is the active drive and the secondary drive is the mirror. When data is written to the active drive, the same data is written to the mirror drive.

            Advantages:

            Provides full redundancy of data
            Disadvantages

Storage capacity is only as large as the smallest drive
            No performance increases
Some downtime to change active drive during a failure

then you can get into even more confusing striping methods...it's been a little while since I had to deal with these, so i'd have to brush up on all of it

yeah but no real benefit in doing it in a home computer. People just like saying there HDDs are in it to make there computer sound more cool

BTW , I have a Linux server and 2 regular PC's I built. Why? because I can and want to learn more and more. Has nothing to do with being "cool" That would only be for you 10 year olds...

But still there is no benefit for having it in a home computer, it adds no performance for games. So no need to state your HDDs are in raid format unless you just feel you want people to know.

And just for everybody, if you are using just your computer for personal use, dont use raid for the HDD.

Sit down and read very carefully. I was asked what the specs were for my pc. Ok, you still with me? Good...
Now, I answered the question and last I looked the HDD were part of my configuration. Got it? Good.
Lastly I use my PC for a lot more than just games so the RAID DOES have some benefits such as better storage performance (Read/Write).
