Father Makes Son Play Through Video Game History, Chronologically

Heard about this story today and found this to be somewhat interesting.

For the last ten years, Andy Baio has been performing an experiment on his son. It is equal parts cruel and fascinating. Rather than let him play whatever video game he wanted, Baio made his boy work his way to modernity by playing through the history of video games chronologically. Starting with 1979's Galaxian.

His son Eliot was born in 2004, so Baio has this week published the findings of his decade-long "experiment in forced nostalgia and questionable parenting." The point was to let his son explore the history of the medium and how it has transformed over the decades, maybe giving him an appreciation of older (or newer but cruder) games that he might otherwise have dismissed as relics.

Eliot was given his first video games on his fourth birthday. Those games were Galaxian (1979), Rally-X (1980), Bosconian (1981), Dig Dug (1982), Pac-Man (1980), Super Pac-Man (1982), Pac-Man Plus (1982) and Pac & Pal (1983).

Next was the Atari 2600. Then the NES. Then the SNES. And so on. And by God, whether it was working or not, it sounds like Eliot was kicking ***.

Eliot got to level 5 in Pac & Pal, an obscure Japanese-only Pac-Man sequel from 1983, all by himself. Pretty badass. http://bit.ly/pacnpal

Eliot just beat the first Zelda, entirely by himself. I only helped by showing him a map of Dungeon 9. That's my boy!

The experiment ended by the time they got to the games released around the time of Eliot's birth, with stuff like Katamari Damacy and Shadow of the Colossus.

And what did they find? Well, not only has Eliot developed a strong taste for roguelikes, but he's also become frighteningly good at video games, to the point where he can complete Spelunky via hell and reach the Nuclear Throne.

Most important, though, is the fact that he can appreciate a game for what it is, not how much money was spent on it or how flashy it looks.

"Eliot's early exposure to games with limited graphics inoculated him from the flashy, hyper-realistic graphics found in today's AAA games", Baio writes. "He can appreciate retro graphics on its own terms, and focus on the gameplay."

"My hope is that this experiment instilled a life-long appreciation for smaller, weirder, more intimate games in him."8

Go make a cup of tea and read the whole study over on Medium.

How the hell did this dudes wife let him do that?

"Honey, I'm gonna teach little Billy life lesson by having him play a incredible amount of video games. You cool with that?"

I love this story. I've been able to get my 7 year old into some older games like the 1989 TMNT, Pac-Man, Galaga, and Joust.

OMG 1989 TMNT frustrated me to no end. I was 6 at the time and I remember there being 1 jump on the PC version that was impossible! at least at the time to me it was. Tried to do it for months and quit, I wonder if I go back now if I could pass that part.

Cool story though, lucky kid gets to play all the games he wants!

I'd try and keep my kid away from 90 something % of modern mainstream gaming also.

Interesting. I wouldn't do this with my kids, but I can appreciate what he's trying to show them.

Its hard to explain, but when I was playing games on my Odyssey or Intellivision back in the day, I would see what was going on on the screen, but my mind was processing it very differently.

I didn't see a stick figure running around on my Odyssey Quest for the Rings game. I saw a Warrior in my mind with a sword and shield something like you would see in todays games. Same with the sports games. I remember the boxing game on the intellivision. Played the heck out of that game with my buddies, we would see Ali & Frazier up on the screen, we wouldn't just see blobs that looked semi-humanoid in solid colors. When you'd knock a guy down, you'd see Fraziers crushing hook or Ali's right cross.

The games were always about the gameplay and could they be fun. It was never about the graphics.

I think that's why I liked the games so much because to some people it was just a bunch of squares moving around, I had all types of images of what those graphics represented.

Played a lot of early RPG's on the Commodore 64. Those weren't just dots and X's walking through a maze. I knew what my characters in my party looked like, what the Monsters looked like, the dungeons. Like I said, very hard to explain, but Wasteland is my all time favorite game and it looked like this....

              Chalepa Ta Kala.....

Re: Father Makes Son Play Through Video Game History, Chronologically

I started off gaming on the coleco vision. Played every system that ever existed, including the $200 a cartridge Neo Geo system. I remember playing Arch Rivals, Double Dribble, Bulls vs Blazers, Madden 92, NHL Face Off 96, FIFA 96. I also remember Wing Commander series, Ultima series, Phantasy Star series, Secret of Mana. Good times back then.....

Now, yes we have realistic looking graphics, but the story line for most games now suck. Every game has a multiplayer mode slapped on it. Damn near every game has a season pass or some sort of DLC for sale. Pretty much every game has a Day 1 patch as well.

So in some ways the gaming industry has made great strides, but in other ways they went backwards and don't put the same level of effort into games now like they did back in the day. I can appreciate what the dad is doing. I did the same thing with my younger brother, nephews and nieces with cartoons, tv shows and movies. Try to show them what the original movies looked like instead of the reboot version of movies and tv shows.

Every kid should start gaming with a NES I think.
The controller is made for kids. I game with my six year old nephew but the trigger and sticks gameplay that we have now is a struggle for little hands.

Damn, if you had Colecovision you must have been RICH. I started on Atari 2600. This is why you will never hear me complain about some shoestrings being the wrong texture ruining Madden for me

Re: Father Makes Son Play Through Video Game History, Chronologically

Very interesting indeed. I've tried something similar with my now turning 5 son. Started at the age of 3+ but with MAME emulator on PC. Some observations and results:
                      - He wasn't interested in Pac-Man.
                      - He was interested in Sonic Classics but it was difficult in this age to react fast because of the speedy gameplay.
Outside of MAME he's now playing:
                      - Sonic Racing All-Stars (his favourite)
                      - F1 Race Stars
                      - Toybox Turbos
                      - Disney Planes (he finished the campaign missions)
                      - Prepar3d Flight Simulator with easy realism settings
                      - RC Aerofly

It's obvious he's more into racing and flying games. He also played some NBA2k14 and NBA2k15 in training mode (just shooting and driving) and he quite liked it because he plays basketball in the garden.
I would like to get him into rpg's in a couple of years but I have to stay away with any kind of violence. I don't know if Zelda is a good option.
I admit though it's very difficult to have your kids playing videogames because after a while the wife gets in the way..

Being almost 35, I of course started on the same systems a lot of us did, Atari 2600, NES, and on. Yet the game I literally played the most was one most of you didn't play much I'm sure.

Then I moved up later lol

Man I loved black bass. My heart would race and my palms would sweet when a monster took the hook.

I don't think any fishing game has captured that since.

I play a lot of older stuff with my kids from the NES days, on my original NES, but we don't do it chronologically. It just seems like that's a good starting point for kids. My son and I did a playthrough of Zelda 1 and had a lot of fun, but it was me doing like 90% of the work while he checked it out lol.
