Re: Warhammer : Total War
Resurrecting this for the new Warhammer: Total War 2.
In a word the game is amazing.
The new classes are really interesting. Fielding a fire breathing dragon on the battlefield is a thing of beauty, and they really improved the effect of magic so that it feels powerful and rewarding.
The vortex campaign adds an interesting dynamic to the series. It's a race against time to complete your factions objective.
The game really shines in the Mortal Empires campaign update though. Here you play a classic Total War domination game, and you can play as any faction from both the original and this new game (included any DLC factions you have). This also means that the world map is massive as you essentially have the map from 2 separate games to get through.
My only complaint is the price. This is a full price game that has half the faction content of the prior game at base. This feels more like a robust expansion pack than a full stand alone release.Comment

Re: Warhammer : Total War
Man, this game is great. I find myself coming back to this one over and over again. The overwhelmingly massive map* with numerous factions that all feel different just makes this the best Total War game ever.
With the upcoming release of a new lord pack featuring pirate vampires I decided to work off some* rust on the game. I've never played a human campaign. The humans just always seemed boring compared to the potential offered fro elves, vampires, orcs, etc...I took the plunge though and set off to make the Empire great again. I found myself really enjoying the empire faction despite the lack of magic and powerful monsters of other races. The balances unit roster allowed me to mix in some diverse unit compositions in battle. This has also been the craziest play through I've ever had in this game.
The setting:
So if you've never played as the empire before your first order of business is to deal with some rebellious secessionist who have a couple of adjacent cities. Their units are relatively weak so ensuring your unchallenged rule within the empire won't take much time. Soon enough I had a few cities to start working on my economy. The bad part about this is you start to see how vulnerable you are. There are potentially friendly human clans to the north east and north west. To the east though are the vampires, West directly is a large mountain occupied by dwarves. To the direct south there are several orc clans. The empire's starting city is also on a river with direct access from the ocean.
With so many threats on every side I decide to turtle up and build my infrastructure. I want to have a strong economy back home to finance the war effort when things start to go down. Things go pretty quiet for a while. I had to deal with one chaos beastman army from the south, but otherwise I was able to make good progress on building up my cities. I even allied the Midlands, a human empire direct north-northeast of me. The Midlands were a relatively weak empire, but they did hold 3 cities. My hope was to be able to get them to join my confederation (basically a peaceful annex) by building our relations while I focused my attention to the east and south where much less friendly factions were. Unfortunately, the Midlands Empire decided that having an ally made them a force to be reckoned with. In a short time they had dragged me into wars against 2 of our fellow human neighbors. I was able to crush one of them easily. The 2nd of them was a little stronger. They were basically directly north of the Midlands. I had to move my main army north into Midland territory before the enemy sacked their city. I suffered some casualties, but I was able to depose of the invading force.
Also at this time I had just begun moving against one of the vampire clans to my east. They were the weaker of the vampire clans, and they were not allied with the other much stronger vampire faction. They appeared to be an easy opponent that my 2nd army back home could deal with, and I expected for matters up north to be taken care of in in just a few more turns.. Unfortunately while I had just moved against the vamps in the east and my army in the north was still recovering after dealing with the earlier invading army, my ally declared war on the Norsca (a clan that wasn't even on our continent, but they had been sending raiding parties. Those raiding parties had been going to our north west though to fight the other humans).*
I was not prepared to fight a 3 pronged war, and I was tired of my ally dragging me into constant conflicts that I wanted no part of, and that I was doing all the fighting in. So I ended my alliance with them rather than go to war with the Norsca. This pissed off my former ally, ruining any chance I had at ever gaining them peacefully. So, with my army already there next to an undefended city I attacked securing a foothold north and punishing my former ally that caused me so many problems. Within a few turns the Midland empire was down to just its capital city left to defend, and on the other side of things I had already captured two Vampire cities as well as built up a 3rd army to fortify captured territories.*
Unfortunately...(that word keeps popping up). The relatively weak vampires that I went to war against got some allies, and had two different orc clans declare war on me. Soon my 3rd army became an active participant defending a passageway to the south between mountains where I had orcs knocking on my door. I was able to handle a large army of orcs thanks to defensive positioning, and I was still making progress on the vampires. They were down to just 2 cities when the straw that broke the camels back suddenly hit. The much stronger, but not allied, vampire faction decided to independently declare war on me.*
So this is the position I found myself in. Two human factions north, each with 1 heavily defended city remaining. I garrisoned two nearby cities to defend against potential counter attacks. To the south I had to defend a narrow passage against multiple Greenskin enemies. Fortunately I had dealt them a major blow by defeating a large army they sent there, but I had to leave a defensive force there for any follow up actions. I had to recall my 1 of my 2 armies attempting to clean up the weaker Vampire faction since my capital was now exposed (the strong vampires clan had a city that was just 1 tile over from my capital), and I had started building 2 more armies to try and stave off this new and largest threat).*
Eventually the stronger vampires attacked in one of the largest battles I have had in any Total War game (3 full stacks on each side, multiple generals/heroes and all made up of mid-higher tier units on both sides). It was a long and hard battle, but the spawn points for my two reinforcing armies were on separate sides of the battle map and eventually the vampires splintered my forces and routed my armies. They suffered heavy losses too, but vampire mechanics are much better at replenishment. Now there is a clear path to my capital and my only option is to recall all of my remaining forces, leaving the outer rim of my empire exposed to invasions.
So to recap.
-Entered into war due to an alliance
-invaded a weaker nation in hopes of getting their resources
-weaker nation calls on stronger allies
-suddenly fighting a war on multiple fronts
-lose a major engagement to the east.
And I just realized I'm Germany lol

Re: Warhammer : Total War
The Vampire Coast DLC is great. The necrofex colossus (basically a 19th century galleon transformer) is just completely OP. Especially if you pick Noctis as your leader, and you get to start the game with one. One of its hands is a triple cannon with nearly 400 range, it does massive damage, and because of it's a tall colossus it almost always has a good firing arc. On top of all of that it's a monster unit so even if you get in close on it then it's going to take a lot to bring it down. It's only weakness is that it's defence is kind of mediocre, but it's large health pool makes up for it.
Overall the VC are a fun, albeit weird faction to play. The bulk of your army will be made up of zombie type units. Later on you can upgrade to a little better melee infantry, but your missile infantry will always zombie types with relatively short range. They make up for this shortfall by being gunpowder based units. So, they rip through armor with their shots, and then they're pretty cheap to employ.
As almost all of your infantry has the meat shield attribute you'll be relying on them to tank the front lines while your creature units hit with some devastating attacks (you have several very cool creature/monster units to choose from).
My biggest complaint about the VC is that the pirate cove mechanic seems almost useless. In order to establish a pirate cove you have to win a battle at a city and then build a pirate cove there. The problem is that after you win a battle at a city, that city becomes defenseless either to foreign threats or potentially a rebellion army. Given the relatively low returns on establish a cove I think you're almost always better off just taking the city over. The only time it might not be idea to do that is if you need your invading army to keep moving and the city's lack of vampiric corruption will cause it to rebel in a few turns.Comment
