I really liked the balance of KOTOR...there was the main plot, but you had a bit of freedom...not as much as Morrowind, but not a totally linear story.

You can definitely tell the difference in emotion though, I remember playing FFX and really starting to care about what happened...same with KOTOR, but i'm not sure you get that as much with the open ended ones...

I haven't played a FF game in forever though, almost seems like a movie you play, sometimes they have really too long cutscenes

        Re: Eastren and Westren RPGs

I definitely prefer Eastern RPGs. My oldest gaming love was Sierra adventure games - gabriel Knight in particular. Those were great. The Eastern RPG replicates that sense of unlocking a story. I also prefer the turn-based systems of most Eastern-style RPGs.

I want be be led along. I want to be told a story.

I'm really looking forward to Lord Of The Rings: Third Age

It's an Eastern-style RPG made by EA, produced by Steve Grey who worked on FF VII among other Square/Enix titles.

one of my favorite RPG-ish game is Kingdom Hearts...had a great storyline, but some choice and while you had a main path there was a bunch of little things you can do. All this makes me realize that the story is key to me, I need to have that grab me for me to get into a RPG...otherwise I just can't play

[QUOTE]I want be be led along. I want to be told a story.[QUOTE]

You know, thats sort of best explaination of why ppl do enjoy eastren RPGs over Westren. They want to be led along.

For example, and I'm not referring to you in any way Fossen, my friend and my gf's brother are 2 ppl who cant seem to grasp games like Morrowind or even Deus Ex. They need to be told were to go or else they'll ask me. Its like they're brain just does'nt want to think of diffrent possibilities and alternate routes, they just wanna follow the flashing arrow that pops up on the screen.

I cant for the life of me stand watching them play any open ended type of game. They're problem solving mentality is non-exsistent. If they run into a locked door, they'll eventually be more frustrated tryna get it open than thinking of a solution to get the door open. And after 10 seconds of wasted brain power, they'll ask for my help and the answer or key to the door would end up right under they're noses.

My point being is that I guess some ppl wanna be led along in a game instead of figure out ways to complete objectives. As for me, I want total custimization in my game. And I hate to be led on.

Deus Ex is another great game. It allows for creativity and character customization while at the same time having an epic, large themed story. The only game elements that I would change would be the addition of a couple of controllable party members to interact with and contrast the main character(J.C.) Groups or "fellowships" if you will, seem to add so much to the experience. It's one of the reasons(besides being Star Wars) that K.O.T.O.R. was so great. HK-47 anyone?

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

good point, i've always wondered why more rpg's werent like western rpgs. Linear feels kind boring because if you don't succeed you can just do the same thing over again (well you can for western, but you have more choice)
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

it's somewhat tough to have a completely open RPG and yet have it hook you with that same storyline...Morrowind did it (I think), I just didn't get into that game for other reasons...I just think it's pretty tough to put it all together with a wide open RPG like that. So many variables, it's too easy to screw one up and have that kill the fun
