    Re: Mafia 3

Boy boy boy I'm already addicted to the game. Started playing last night around 12 and told myself I was only going to get 2-3 missions in. By the time I looked at the clock it was 3am. After that I told myself I would continue playing til 4am that way i could get 3 hours of sleep before work... Next thing I know it's 6am and my alarm on my Iphone is going off smh.

I'm playing on XBox One and I'm loving the graphics so far. Melee system is pretty nice. A.I. doesn't really seem challenging so far, but that could be because I'm playing on normal difficulty with auto assist aim on high. Managed to have my first boss fight which went down at a creepy abandoned amusement park. Only thing I'm really not liking is the driving.

Felt good taking out those Dixie Mafia arseholes especially since the Dixie Mafia started in my state of Mississippi. Did a nice amount of missions for Cassandra and just now started to side missions for Vito. Liking the way they continued his story after what took place in Mafia 2.

I don't usually care about reviews but Karak's are really good.

Curious to know how long is the story? 7/10/24 hours??? Can't seem to find any info on it.

WTF, you don't have the game already?

I figured you would had it 2 weeks ago!

I was really looking forward to buying it at some point, but I'm not sure I will. After all the gameplay videos I have seen (the early ones and the ones from the retail version), there's just something off about this game. Maybe it's because the game is more of an open world game, not sure (not to mention that there is hardly any car damage, just none deformation - you can hit a brick wall at 80 mph and all you get it is a loose bumper, if anything).

It looks like standards were higher when they published Mafia 2. Too bad. It could have been awesome.
Didn't play Mafia 1 or 2. But I'd venture to say the standards set by R* and GTA V have a lot to do with the game feeling "off".

They're king of open world games, and fair or not, any other open world game will be judged along those lines. The trick (for me) is taking it for what it is and knowing it'll be a different experience. I admittedly love R* games but it doesn't make this series bad just because it ISN'T R*.

As great as Mafia 3 looked leading up to release (last 2 weeks and launch issues notwithstanding) I never planned on buying this right away, but I did plan to buy it down the road. Partly because of limited time to play and other games releasing, but also because I know it would feel totally different from what I expect in an " open world" game.

Saying that, it doesn't mean won't be good or enjoyable. If its a good story and the core mechanics are not complete crap, I'm still betting it's a damn good game.

For me, buying during a Steam sale after release goes a long way in justifying any "shortcomings". There are games I have to have on release day, there are games I can wait for. Doesn't mean the games I wait for I expect to be bad.

Again, all my personal opinion here and I look forward to reading all of your impressions, good and bad before my inevitable purchase.

                    Re: Mafia 3

Even though I needed sleep, I couldn't resist jumping on last night. Put about 3 hours into it, got through the back story and the prologue missions and finally reached the point where the game opens up and the revenge begins before I called it a night.

As someone who actually had not played the Mafia series before, though I have seen a ton of Mafia 2 gameplay, and even as a massive GTA V fan, I am really enjoying this game.

I haven't come across any issues affecting gameplay yet, though I do have to reteach myself not to run and gun like GTA, since the ammo for guns is limited in this, I can't just run around firing off 1,000 bullets like in GTA. That was my biggest struggle last night, in a firefight with the cops only to be sitting there with an empty gun and nothing but my dick in my hand.

                      Great stuff.
I've been looking for a non-sports, non-FPS game to dive into.

                      Me too.
The last two games I knew nothing about, but purchased on the strength of OS Community noise were two of my favourite games of all time; Sleeping Dogs and Mad Max.

I have EB credit for one game. I think I'm going to take the gamble and get this game.

It so far is a fun game. Now granted, I haven't experienced the true open world portion of the game yet, just the beginning.

The first hour or two is pretty much on rails, as they're telling the back story of how the events of the game came to be. It's basically a big prologue with you going from mission to mission, learning the characters, learning about Lincoln Clay, his family/friends and the big moment that sets him on a bloodthirsty mission of revenge that is the actual proper game.

It also serves as a tutorial, showing you the controls to drive, use the cover system, ways to help yourself in gunfights, how interactions with the police play out, etc.

Unfortunately, I only had just gotten to the end of the prologue after 2 1/2 to 3 hours of playing last night. I am right at the start of the mission that starts to open up the world of the game, so I haven't experienced too much about how it will actually be when you gain the freedom of choice.

But based on the first couple hours, even being pretty much on rails, I know I'm gonna love every minute of this game.

Edit - Also, I love the title screen. You hit the main title screen and instantly Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower starts playing. I don't know why, but the second that intro starts playing, it gets me pumped to play.

I appreciate the impressions in this thread so far and please keep them coming. Between everything I read on here balanced against everything I read so far in reviews I am 50/50 on whether or not I will purchase right away or wait for a sale.

I agree with what Gerg said on the page back. Any game like this is, inevitably, fair or not, draw comparisons to GTA5, and it's hard to always go against the gold standard like that and come out looking shiny.

It seems like this is a game I will enjoy, but with Gears, BF1, and TF2 coming out in consecutive weeks this might be a game I get on a winter sale.

Yeah I was excited about this game and wanted to get the PC version. I think I'm going to wait for a sale. Just going to pick up Gears.
