Saw this got a patch today. Next time you play it could you let us know if it's any better?

I only played one game earlier today as I was busy most the day. The framerate is alot better not perfect but much better at least in the one game I played. I believe they said performance will be gradually improved overtime so it's a good start. There's alot of under the hood & visual fixes. Gore has been fixed but some said if it's disabled it improves the framerate. Not sure but next time I'll turn it off to see how it is compared to when it's on. Here's the patch list. https://www.reddit.com/r/VerdunGame/...re_on_the_way/

I tried with gore off & it did seem to run smoother than with it on. Still playable with gore on but seems to have a bit more stutter & pops. It's good they are improving the framerate & they did say more patches are on the way.

            Re: Verdun (XBX1, PS4)

Has anyone played the recently released WW I shooter, Verdun, on XB1? I know it's been on PC for a while.

I've read mixed reviews of the XB1 version. Many complain of lousy framerate, ghosting, crappy online servers and other weirdness. But nearly everyone praises the realistic nature of the trench warfare, saying it's much more gritty and challenging than the loose, "adventure-style" WWI combat depicted in Battlefield 1, a game I enjoy.

Verdun is only $20 on XB1. Within the "Why the hell not, take a flyer, man" range of my money clip. But I don't want to waste 20 bones if the game is a train wreck.

Any first-hand feedback? I'm thinking this could be the 2017 shooter equivalent of NASCAR Heat Evolution, a game that features shallow play modes, lousy graphics and sound but remains incredibly fun to play because it features the most realistic oval track racing handling and AI models I've ever played on a console.

            Thanks.

              Re: Verdun (XBX1, PS4)

Resistance crumbled, and I bought this game last night for $20. Initial impressions, after about two hours of play:

This is a $20 game, no question. The graphics are Xbox 360 level, no better. The game was built on the Unity Engine, which also was used for the NASCAR Heat Evolution and The Golf Club, two games that never will win any awards for their graphics.

The animations also are ropey at times, due to the Unity Engine.

Offline is limited to one mode, which isn't that compelling. Online has three or four game modes, all of which are fun. But Frontlines, which is squad-based, territorial-possession combat, is the only mode with a sizable population. And nearly all of the combat takes place in trench networks. You're not going to gallivant through the mountains of Italy or deserts of Palestine, like in Battlefield 1.

Four-man squads for the Allies and Central Powers fight in Frontlines. Each squad has four distinctive roles from which you can choose. But each of the individual roles must be filled: You can't build a squad with four snipers, for example.

So far, you're probably thinking this game is a train wreck. It is, on the surface. It's ugly, with limited modes.

But I still find Verdun compelling and fun because it captures the chaos and confusion of trench warfare brilliantly. The ID of soldiers running in the trenches isn't easily apparent with labels, so you really need to look closely at the uniform of someone near you to determine whether it's friend or foe. That creates very gripping tension. I yelled for the first time while playing a first-person shooter last night when a Central Powers' soldier surprised the s*** out of me by rounding a corner, killing me in a trench.

There's also a cool leadership feature in the game. When you're within hearing distance of your NCO, he will issue commands to either defend your trench or attack another trench. If you successfully defend your trench, your NCO will issue counterattack orders to attack the enemy's trench.

And it's pretty damn taut when you climb from your trench and try to cross no-man's land to approach the enemy's trench. It's tough to see foes, as they're not identified by labels or markers, and they can be anywhere. Plus there's barbed wire that will ensnare and kill you due to blood loss, and shells are exploding everywhere. No-man's land on some maps does have a few spots to hide and snipe, which is cool.

It's really exhilarating to cross no-man's land successfully and reach the enemies' trench. And the sense of satisfaction is immense when you clear that trench and are ordered to continue to attack the next trench network.

One final point: The ballistics in this game are excellent. Recoil and accuracy are modeled wonderfully. You won't automatically lock on to enemies like in COD or sometimes in BF. You must account for range, wind, type of gun, etc.

Verdun isn't for everyone. If you want pretty graphics, a sprawling, epic campaign game or a game with a variety of action and modes, skip Verdun. But if you're interested in true World War I combat that's tense, with compelling ballistics, then it's worth a $20 flier.

I hoped this game was similar to NASCAR Heat Evolution, an ugly game with animation issues and skimpy modes but a great core game engine. I think that describes Verdun perfectly.

One thing you missed, at least in my experience on PC, is that this game nails down WWI perfectly in the fact that the majority of your games will be a draw and it'll have meant there were hundreds of deaths in a match that resulted in no ground gain. When you actually take a trench or multiple and win a game you feel the satisfactory of real hard work.

                    Verdun (XBX1, PS4)

Is this a digital download or is it on disc?

I honestly forgot all about this game and am a sucker for anything involving WWI or WWII

                    It's still $19.99. Worth it?

To answer your question whether it's worth it: It depends.

If you expect deep modes, gorgeous graphics and a deep pool of online players like in BF1, skip Verdun. The game has crap graphics, limited online and offline modes and features a gritty re-creation of trench warfare. That's it.

But there's real tension in the online gameplay due to the accurate depiction of trench warfare, whether it's wondering if there's a foe around the corner of a trench or hoping against hope you can make it across no-man's land long enough to reach the enemy's trench. And the game captures the ebb-and-flow stalemate of trench warfare so well.

Finally, the ballistics of the weapons are among the most realistic I have played on a console. You don't get lock-on, aim-and-shoot kills, especially from distance.

I'm really enjoying Verdun for what it is: A fun $20 game. Your mileage may vary. But remember: This is NOT a big-budget blockbuster. It's a niche game with a solid core gameplay engine as the bedrock of a big pile of flaws.

                            Appreciate the feedback PK.

I'm don't care about graphics. I enjoyed the original Homefront on the PS3 and it looked horrible, but the story was great and the firefights were epic. So from what you're saying, I'm going to enjoy Verdun.

I think I'm going to download when I get home.
