The standards generally seem to be set when gaming was first developed, and now companies are just adding more advanced AI, graphics, and other features. But I would think this is consistent across all gaming genres, and not just first person shooters, no?
For sports games maybe.. for other genres except FPS I would say no. Really, in FSP you run around as fast as you can and shoot as fast as you can and shoot. I would bet if you took 5 FPS games from a 5 year span and went into a time machine and took them back 5 years, you would not be able to tell which one came out first.
    Rent this space.

I guess, but even adventure games and such seem to have the same core gameplay elements.

I actually agree with you, but instead think that more genres than sports and FPS are included. I guess maybe sports and FPS are the most blantantly obvious, and that causes them to stand out, which could also be a credit to the development of other genres.

I find it interesting when my dad walks by the TV when I'm playing the game and he says it's the same thing all the time.. He asks how I don't get bored with these games, as they are all the same to him, which I guess is true, but I think gamers also tend to appreciate the smaller nuiances and progress in games, as opposed to the average Joe who doesn't follow or care to follow the gaming scene at a closer level.

I guess one of the ongoing challenges for game companies is to "keep it fresh," and keep people interested. The Grand Theft Auto series seems to be an example of this. GTA3 had a huge "Wow!" factor, but by San Andreas it's a lot of the same, but also improved, and tons are buying it. I guess the same applies to Halo, Doom, and first person shooters, but I think the inclusion of clans, online play, and so much improvement on an originally solid FPS (IMO), results in it also selling tons of copies. Whether or not that classifies it as a good game is definitely a personal opinion though.
