    Help me...

(there's no general sports discussion.. but I need help.)

... I'm growing old. I'm no longer good at video games at all.

I'm 28 years old and no longer find that I can win any sports games right out of the box. I get killed on default levels even after a dozen games under my belt against the CPU. I have to set sliders to 0 for the CPU and my sliders to max on the easiest setting for me to have a chance. I have to set all my players ratings to 99 and the CPU players ratings as low as possible and I'm still in dogfights. Practice and practice and I do not feel i am getting better. In fact, I'm getting worse.

I feel that I used to be good at video games once, but now I am no longer any good. In fact, I am the worst video game player in modern history. I have the video game version of Steve Blass disease. Please help me.

    Re: Help me...

Just stick with it. Just play at default level with default sliders until you get the hang of it. I was really getting pissed when I first got NBA 2k5 because the CPU was spanking me on default level. I kept with it and now I win many of my games. I still lose but I win my fair share too. Just don't give up and as long as you are having fun it doesn't really matter what level you are playing on.

If I lose I'd rather it be competitive instead of being helpless, you know :P being helpless ain't fun. I played College Hoops 2K5.. the guys said out of the box it's an awesome experience, and I trust their opinions to death. They play on the HIGHEST difficulty levels with no problems whatsoever.. they have fun games even when they lose.

Providence's Donnie McGrath put up EIGHTY-TWO points on 100% shooting. He outscored my team. I could not stop him.. that's no fun. Double teamed him and put hands in his face and everything.. He sunk everything. He's not even the Friar's best player in real life.

It wasn't all that long ago when I can just take the games out of the box and have fun, thrilling games win or lose.. now it's not unusual for me to lose games, both of the football and basketball variety, by 40 points on default no matter the teams... so yea, my confidence is shot. I see these guys play on the highest difficulty levels and it doesn't help matters!

I'm with ya on this. I'm only 23 but never played a ton of games until I got my Xbox about 2 years ago. I'm still relatively good at the sports games but I've been playing Halo and get spanked by kids half my age. I think it's a matter of they have more free time to be playing these games so they have the time to get better at them...which we don't.

I keep playing 'cause it's fun and usually try to play against friends or people from here. As far as playing the computer, I've never really gotten much out of it because on every game, no matter what sliders, there are a few things the AI always falls for and it makes it too easy to win.

                28 and you're "growing old"?

If you're old, I'm soon to be daisy food.

I'm 48 and getting spanked on Halo by kids one fourth my age. Younger people have an advantage at video games. I was in my mid 30's when I started playing Genesis Madden and succeeded against my brother and friend(brother-same age, friend-4 years older), but rarely beat my friend's boys who were 9 and 12 at the time.

                            Re: Help me...

It's one thing to open up a game and get beat straight out of the box.. I tend to start off with a mismatch in my favor a few times just to get the hang of the controls. While the core of these games usually are the same year after year, there's enough new features added where one would probably have to play a few exhibition games or go into practice to get used to them.

I usually after the few initial mismatches in my favor to play a few games between even teams, and then play games where the CPU has a mismatch in their favor in order to get a feel for the game and adjust sliders in recent cases so all the games feel a bit right considering the limitations of AI.

Hoiwever, I can't even win these human-favored mismatches :P. Like I said above, I'd rather be competitive in losing because I'd know where I'd make mistakes and in future games would adjust accordingly. But I get my butt handed to me so quickly that I simply cannot understand what I'm doing wrong. That's no fun where one can't learn from their mistakes in a loss.. at least to me. It's one thing to lose when you have a bad team going up against a good or great team. You know why you lost :P. When you get lit up by a bad team when you're a good team and you feel that you understand the game.. it's not fun :P. Maybe once in awhile it can happen.. it always has to in these games. But every time?
