    Favorite RPG?

Taking some inspiration from the "Favorite FPS" thread.

This is kind of a difficult genre to pick from because it encompasses so many major sub-genres. You have JRPG's like Final Fantasy, Action RPG's like Skyrim, Tactical RPG's like Fire Emblem, etc...So maybe it would be better to break it out by those sub-genre's

    JRPG - Xenosage 1.
Really it's the entire Xenosaga trilogy that deserves to be mentioned as they all go together, but I'll list the first one since it is what got me hooked into the saga. For me, JRPG's are all about the story and its characters, and no RPG (no other game period for that matter) has ever delivered the epic story and memorable characters that Xenosaga did. At times the game is like watching a movie with its very lengthy cutscenes, but I actually loved that about the game because it was so story driven. Those long scenes just really pull you into the universe and give you a feel for what is going on.

Action RPG - Mass Effect 2.
I probably would have picked Mass Effect 1 if it had the same gameplay improvements that the sequel did, but I really can't be upset picking ME2 either. To me the Mass Effect series has the deepest and most compelling story of any game outside of Xenosaga, and the 2nd installment in the series really upped the stakes. Also, few games really let you make a character your own in the way the ME series does with all the story impacting choices you make throughout.

Tactical RPG - Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
I don't play a ton of these, but I'll list the one that I have definitely played the most. The learning curve for the combat is pretty steep if you really want to master the game, but it's fun leveling up your characters to maximize their potential. Also, Prinnies.

Some honorable mentions I'd like to add, but I'll wait to see what others say.

    JRPG: Yakuza 0
Probably the best story I have ever played in a JRPG if it counts as that because it isnt fully open world and acts as more of a beat em up game but has lots of JRPG elements. The story pacing, characters and tension is absolutely perfect. When it switches from both protagonists after chapters it just makes me want to play more and more. There is a god ton of content to do in this game as well from minigames to side stories and etc. Its like watching a movie with the long cutscenes in the story but when you do side stories its a nice change of pace with a lot of humor. Top all that off with a lovely 1080p and 60fps gameplay.

    Action RPG: The Witcher 3
This was tough because imo Horizon Zero Dawn beats it out technically but The Witcher 3 had everything Horizon didnt. The storyline in Witcher 3 was one to remember, sure it was tedious at point but some moments such as the Bloody Baron arc are gaming's pinnacle. The open world is beautiful and the characters are memorable. Along with two beautifully crafted DLC's.

I don't play tactical RPG's but yeah those two are my top two RPG games and both in my top 5 games of all time.

      Re: Favorite RPG?

      Nice thread idea.

JRPG by itself is far too broad for me to narrow down to one game, so I'd like to break it down further by console generations that I've owned:

      NES: Final Fantasy
      SNES: Chrono Trigger
      Playstation: Final Fantasy 7
PS2: This one's impossible. Dragon Quest 8, Xenosaga, Persona 3 and 4 are all among my favorite all-time games - not just in the JRPG category. PS2 gen was amazing for these types of games.
PS3: Valkyria Chronicles (overlaps a bit with tactical RPG)
      PS4: Persona 5

ARPG: Either Diablo 3 or Skyrim. I lost many, many hours to both (and I never even finished Skyrim's main story - just endless side-questing)

Tactical RPG: XCOM 2, and if it didn't exist then it would be Enemy Unknown/Within. Lots of gameplay advancements over the original, procedural generation meant never playing quite the same thing twice. I still play it regularly.

        Re: Favorite RPG?

Along with sports games this is my favorite genre. I could list 100 games here that I love, but I'll list the 6 that are in a class by themselves for me. Interestingly enough, no game from the 21st century has been able to jump over any of these games our join them in my Tier One hierarchy. Divinity Original Sin 2 has a chance though.

        Planescape: Torment
        Xenogears
        The Complete Ultima VII
        Baldur's Gate II
        Crono Cross
        Final Fantasy Tactics
        Jordan Mychal Lemos
        @crypticjordan

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I feel like this one would definitely be on my list if I ever purchased it.

              Re: Favorite RPG?

Final Fantasy 7: My favourite game of all time. Before I played it, I only ever thought of video games as a distraction, something fun to do. After playing it, I was captivated, inspired. Games were suddenly art, and I was motivated to create my own art. There is only one, maybe two more events in my life that I would consider more influential and impactful than playing Final Fantasy 7.

The game itself was ambitious, and it was a first in bringing many technologies and techniques to the industry. The story behind it's creation is pretty cool as well (PlayStation would not exist if it weren't for this game). The graphics have aged very poorly, and there is no denying that the dialogue is awkward and stilted at times due to translation issues, but it's surprising how fun the game still is even today. But the best part was the story. It flew in the face of the concept of genre and had a well set up yet still surprising twist. From intro to ending, it still captivates me to this day.

Kingdom Hearts 2: I still remember plugging the disk into my PS2, excited to finally continue following the adventures of Sora. Instead I get saddled with some blonde-haired stranger that I knew nothing about. Yet by the time the first arc of the story was rolling towards it's conclusion, I was more invested in Roxas than I was in Sora. The story ended up having it's issues and hiccups, but that beginning will be something I remember forever.

Valkyria Chronicles: Didn't quite have the same impact that the previous two did, but is still my choice for "the best game no-one played". It's really too bad that Sega decided to ruin the franchise. If they could just realease a version of the original game that has more maps and online multiplayer, that would be enough for me. 2 was a mere shadow of the first game, and don't get me started on the newest one.

Bethesda Games in general. I just love their style of freedom, but it's the mods that bring them into the top tier.

Very good call here. I was tempted to break it out like that too because I agree that each console generation is worthy of it's own, and even that is difficult as I could easily list 3 that I feel equally about.

snes - Really close call between Earthbound and Final Fantasy 6. I'll go with FF6 though because the rather shocking events that occurred during the game plus the large ensemble of characters. Many others are worth mentioning too as I feel like the SNES was a system where developers were really just getting their feet wet so you had this wide range of unique attempts at games that were really interesting.

PS1 - I hate to go with another Final Fantasy title, but I have always loved FF8. It was the first game I ever played where the opening cutscene just left me like "wow". That and all the music was just fantastic. Every Final Fantasy has had great music. FF7 was the first to not be limited the hardware restrictions of old (even though the Squaresoft composers did a great job on the SNES), and I can still vividly remember all the different aspects of that soundtrack. FF8 was just on another level though. You have all of that, and I haven't even mentioned how cool it was to jump into the game and realize you were at a school that trained mercenaries.

                  Also this was spot on
PS2 gen was amazing for these types of games.

I have to kind of agree with this JFsolo about

I think you're ending it at the PS1 level. I would make that statement PS2 timeframe, but overall the message is similar. The first KOTOR is the only game I would put anywhere near the level of the above games for ps3/360 and beyond. After that, maybe I'd go with tales of Vesperia, but that one doesn't come close. Even the last 2 off-line Final Fantasy experiences aren't worthy of the old list. Final Fantasy 13 was a game that I actually really enjoyed, but it could have been so much better. Then there is Final Fantasy 15 which was a day 1 purchase for me, and I think I have logged 3 hours in it.

If Dark Souls falls into this category, than that - hands down. For me it is the best RPG series of all time.

Takes a little while to get used to all the elemental stuff that goes on though.
