    Re: Favorite RPG?

Yeah the Final Fantasy team has hands down the best production value in gaming, and FFXIII was another solid performance by them. I recommend checking out FFXII. Even with PS2 technology I think it has the best opening cinematic of the series.

My first attempt at playing XIII was lost when my fat ps3 blew up. Originally I was having fun, but I didn't really love the game (mainly because of the combat system). When I came back to it many months later with a new PS3 I did gain an appreciate for the battle system. It still wasn't my favorite of the series, but I did learn to enjoy it.

I think my biggest complaint about the linearity of the game lay at the feet of Square Enix making such a beautiful world. It really made me want to explore it more in depth. I probably would haven't cared as much had the game only consisted of Pulse. Pulse was pretty, but I could have fit it with any other game with a foresty terrain. Cocoon was special though.

Off the top of my head in no particular order and no particular classification:

      Final Fantasy VII
      Diablo II
      Shadowrun (Sega Genesis)
      Final Fantasy X

and my new addiction: Grim Dawn

Hmm, no love for Persona 4? That game definitely tops my J-RPG list.

Definitely agree that Disgaea 1 was the best, especially on the DS version where you can unlock Plenair.

I wasn't a big fan of the one that didn't have Etna in it. For a game that is all about comedic relief, I always find her to create the most entertaining scenes.

I think so. RPG is such a hard genre to define. By definition, even something like Call of Duty meets both the literal and many of the classical definitions for RPG.

For the purposes of this discussion, I definitely think Zelda qualifies as an action or adventure RPG.

I always considered Legend of Zelda, much like Halo, Mass Effect, Tomb Raider and Unchartered series to be adventure games. I mean you just can't lump everything into RPG category.

I agree you can't lump everything into the RPG category, but there are definitely different genres of RPG. RPG is really just an umbrella term for a number of different genres, and this is what makes it hard to define: .A lot of people think of a turn based combat system like Final Fantasy VII as a requirement for a RPG, but then where does that put the Star Ocean and Tales of X games which both have real time combat systems yet are otherwise identical in concept?

I'd say Halo is without a doubt a FPS, but Mass Effect is an action/adventure RPG. Heavy on story, a level based progression system, side quests etc. In fact, I'd say that Mass Effect is one of the best definitions of a Role Playing Game since it isn't a linear experience, and you actually get to decide what kind of character you're playing.. Something like Zelda is a bit more on he fence as it kind of hits on a couple of the RPG characteristics, but it doesn't fully do so. So, I'd be ok to just call it an adventure game.

While I don't think that the ability to play a role like it's some classic table top RPG is necessary, to me there are certain characteristics that make up a RPG video game.

                          Big on story
Level based progression system (or something similar).
                          A crafting system.
                          An inventory/loot system.
                          Character "classes"
                          "Quests", "Side Quests", Exploration.

Not every RPG will hit all of these characteristics, and many games in other genres will touch on some of them . It's just a matter of what the focal point of the game is.

Lots of new stuff has been covered so I'm gonna go old school to my pc roots (pre 2000).

Bard's Tale - I used to use graph paper and map out the dungeons. That **** was HARD but I loved it.
Pool of Radiance - PC gaming meets D&D. I was hooked on both at the time so this fit my world perfectly
Planescape: Torment The setting and D&D rule set had me from the start. Have very fond memories of playing this.
Fallout - My 1st trip away from fantasy and into Sci-Fi and my love of the series never faltered. I've recently got back in and finished Fallout 4 DLC over the last month or so.
Baldur's Gate - This is when RPG stories really started to get good. Baldur's Gate and Fallout are still two of the best story driven series I've played.

Then there's Neverwinter Nights 2. It doesn't make the pre 2000 cut but it gets an honorable mention. So many good things about this game but the highlight is it came with the toolbox to make your own story. I dabbled with it a little but I was never a good DM. I loved downloading other peoples created adventures though. It gave the game tremendous long life.

All that being said. Twist my arm and make me name one game to pass the time on a deserted island, its the Witcher 3. Probably no contest.
