Yeah Black Flag is a favorite of mine also. Then 2. Haven't played Origins yet.

I didn't play all of them but I think 2 was the best for me. I really liked 1 when it came out thought the graphics were amazing for the time. Too many games too soon kinda killed the franchise for me though.

Black Flag for sure, have Origins coming by Friday, so will see how it stands up. I know visually it will, but story wise.

Origins is the hands down best and I don't even think it's close. There's just not a lot of extra fluff that has plagued this series since the start and continued accumulating.

They really honed in on the best parts of the series and discarded or re-worked the rest. I love Altair and Ezio, but those games didn't take long to get tedious.
Since no one answered you ...

Libertation was originally a PS Vita exclusive that was ported to the PC. It looks good but is very shallow. The lead character is female and the New Orleans setting is interesting but overall there's really not much to do. Probably the worst of the AC games (I'm not including the side scrollers which I haven't played) and definitely the shortest. You're probably best to avoid unless you are a huge fan of the series. I think at least one of the characters from Black Flag is in it.

I liked the 1st few Assassin's Creeds. But I backed off of AC. I Think the last one I played all the way through was AC3. It just felt repetitive after that point. An AC game pretty much came out every year since 2007. I'm not big on games that come out every year. Yeah, you don't have to wait a couple years for the next game to come out. But, it doesn't give too much time to develop game. So, some games will be good and some you have to really enjoy the story to like the game.

But, I do plan on getting Origins soon. It seems like an enjoyable game.

I've somehow never played an AC game. Would Origins be the best starting point, or should I go all the way back to the beginning and work up from there?

Honestly I couldn't get into Origins. I got 1-2 hours in and couldn't get into it. I feel that it is a good game. But, the last 3-4 AC I couldn't get into

Origins takes place a thousand years before AC1. So really you can go in any order that you prefer. Origins basically tell you how they became Assassins and why. Where as the other games, you are already Assassins.
