I'm sure they'll eventually try to buy them out but at this point EA has no control over Ubisoft.

EDIT- This was also in the article:

EA's stake secures it access to 18.4 percent of the voting rights against 22.8 percent held by Ubi Soft's founders, the Guillemot family, Ubi Soft said.

One interesting thing is that people think EA is going to sell out. So basically there just buying everythign they can so if anyone buys them its so much money, but then again that doesnt make really any sense.

                    Exactly.

EA is just like the Average Joe that buys stock in say McDonalds (is Mcdonalds public?). The major difference, of course, is that EA can own 18% of the stock whereas the Average Joe would own less than .01% (just an estimate, but I'm sure it's actually lower than that).

This is a business move to make money. Nothing wrong here. Anyone can do it and it benefits Ubisoft.

This type of move helps Ubisoft collect money for its stockholders and it lowers their stock price. Then in turn, Ubisoft will continue to produce quality games and watch their stock price rise up again as they repurchase their stock and in result increase their working capital.

If that's the case UBI doesn't appear to happy and they were calling the move "Hostile".
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

This is bad news for the industry. It's hilarious to see people who defend this move. EA is going to cause gaming to fall flat on it's face.

It's only 20% now, but I will bet my house that EA will buy Ubi Soft within the next 2-3 years, as well as others. This was just a first step for EA, in a takeover move against Ubi Soft. They just made a new offer to Dice, and you can expect them to be bought within the next month. Say goodbye to the Rallisport Challenge series Xbox owners.

If this continues gamers can expect the following:
