Re: I don't get IGN
Where do you get your info from? Madden 05' got the same score it got the year before, beating out ESPN. And like it or not, NHL has more 8+ scores versus under 8 according to Gamerankings.Originally posted by pk500Thank you. ESPN advertised like mad this year at a variety of sites -- way more than in past years.
IGN inhaled the payola, and its scores of ESPN reflected that. This was the first year that IGN didn't jizz all over Madden, and it was the first year that a lot more ESPN advertising showed up at IGN before the release of the football games.
Coincidence? I think not.
And is it a coincidence that IGN gives nearly all EA games a score of at least 8.0? Even the HORRIBLE NHL 2005 got an 8.3 from IGN. I think IGN starts every EA Sports game review at a base score of 8.0 and works up from there.

Re: I don't get IGN
Which only further illustrates how f*cked up IGN is. Madden gets a 9.5; ESPN gets a 9.4, yet ESPN is named as the IGN Sports Game of the Year? How does that make sense?Originally posted by ErvWhere do you get your info from? Madden 05' got the same score it got the year before, beating out ESPN. You can talk about "different writers" all you want, but the point is that the editorial management at IGN -- an oxymoron if there ever was one -- needs to ensure consistency in its grading and content, and it doesn't. Otherwise, a lower-rated game wouldn't be named "Sports Game of the Year."
As for NHL, I could give a hoot what the Gamerankings.com average is. All that proves is that IGN isn't alone giving EA games artificially inflated scores.
IGN gave NHL 2004 -- an excellent game -- a suitable score of 8.8. But to say NHL 2005, which is so lacking in every category compared to NHL 2004, only a half-point reduction to 8.3 again is further proof that it sure seems that IGN starts all EA Sports game scores at 8.0 and works up from there. NHL 2005 is an arcadish piece of sh*t compared to NHL 2004, which was a really good game and showed that EA was heading in more of a sim direction for hockey.
You can inhale the IGN bias all you want. Truth is, you can learn more about a game's true strengths and weaknesses in five minutes at a forum like this or Digital Sportspage than you can reading the IGN review 10 times.
Take care,

If you read more into the awards you could see that everybody voted for each category. So what you are saying is one guy's opinion should override the entire staff's? OK.
Again I don't pay IGN's reviews of sports games much attention, but they don't play sports games for the same reasons we do. Unrealistic aspects like checking in NHL may make the game funner to them and most of the general audience. That's just how it is.Comment

Re: I don't get IGN
IGN is by far and away the most popular videogame review site. I know members of OS always rush to their keyboards to be the first to post IGN reviews/previews.
I don't put a lot of stock with IGN Sport reviews because their reviews cater to the average gamer, and the average gamer prefers their sport games to be more arcadey than sim.
It's best to either try out the game yourself or just read impressions from other OS members because this site is mainly for simheads.Comment

i'm not saying we should just listen to ign but i found it kind of strangeOriginally posted by ActLikeYouKnow8I don't understand why everybody gets so upset over rewards or what credentials a game has. The most I use to judge a game is the reaction here at OS and reviews I find on the internet. Even the lowest rating game can be somebody's favorite game of all-time. GOTY doesn't mean jack**** to me.Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.Comment
