    Re: blu-ray dvd/ea

It seems that the PS3 will be the only next-gen console to use next-gen DVD formats ... this is from the GameCube's latest mailbag:

On top of that, word on the street is that Microsoft is going to stick with standard DVD technology with the successor to Xbox. Not Blu-Ray. And not HD-DVD, as some had suspected. The rumor is that NEC and Co. pitched Microsoft on the idea of using HD-DVD in Xbox 2, but couldn't deliver the drives at a cost anywhere close to what the Seattle-based giant needed to make this new console happen in the price-friendly range. If true, this is sure to give Nintendo yet another reason not to bother with either next-gen disc format. And if that happens, PlayStation 3 would likely arrive as the only console capable of playing high-definition movies out of the box.

I talked with some developers working on Xbox 2 about this situation.

"So, do you think this means that Sony's PS3 is going to ride the success of Blu-Ray in the same way that PS2 initially rode the success of DVD?" I asked.

"I honestly don't know," one said. "Right now, I'm not sure that Blu-Ray will matter. But then again, I thought the same thing about DVD this generation and look what happened to Nintendo."
