Not to triple post (feel free to delete my 2nd post, but not this one) but I just got the PSP from USPS. Here are my impressions -

Thanks to samuraijapan on Ebay, today I received my PSP value pack and Ridge Racers game. First of all, the PSP is MUCH smaller than I thought! I thought the PSP was going to be as big as a XBOX/PS2/Gamecube game box but I was wrong, which is good IMO. Anyways the PSP is VERY nice looking and the button layout, like PS2's, is great.

The case is pretty good and the earphones are pretty comfortable. The memory stick is TINY! I swear, I remembered the scene from Zoolander where Zoolander has this cellephone that's extremely tiny and that's how the memory stick was. I barely even saw it because it's so small. Then there is a power cord which plugs into the charger which then plugs into the PSP.

The game (Ridge Racers) is very small too, pretty funny when I put it on one of my XBOX discs and I am pretty sure it's smaller than gamecube games. The cover itself is also smaller than the system boxes but not drastically smaller like the disk.

Anyways the only thing I've been able to do is setup the PSP (language, time, timezone, PSP name, etc.) but from the menu noises the sound is very crisp for a handheld system. Now once my PSP is done charging and I can figure out how to get the disc out of the UMD protecter, I will play Ridge Racers and give impressions.

Hey, I can't help it. heh, anyways, here are my impressions of Ridge Racer -

Anyways even though Ridge Racers menu's are in Japanese I managed to get in a single player race. (luckily the main menu's (single player, options, etc.) and car list and such are in english) And let me just say, people WAY exaggerated the loading times. I was hearding 15-20 seconds from the main menu to racing and that's not even close. Unless you spend forever going through the 1 track and 3 cars (at the start, have to unlock the rest) it takes maybe 10 seconds. After choosing the car and track, there is about 2-5 seconds loading and then the announcer starts talking, the camera swivels around your car and the 3 second countdown starts.

Anyways the game is pretty sweet. The graphics are a mixture of PS2 graphics and low-detailed PS2/PC graphics. The cars, aside from some very un-noticable jaggies, are something you would see in a PS2 game but things like mountains are pretty low detailed. But seeing this on a system that's a bit smaller than your hand, amazing. (my hands are pretty big )

The controls are pretty smooth, surprisingly. Even though I read reviews of this game saying it took them about 5-10 minutes and several races to get used to the analog stick after my first drag, I pretty much was used to it and I like it better than PS2/GC/XBOX's analog stick. Overall I did pretty good IMO, as I finished in 4th place (out of 12) and I pulled some pretty sweet drag's, almost wiping out twice. The competition didn't seem tough though, but it was just a exhibition race and the game is probably on easy, so no biggie.

The sound is, as every aspect of the PSP and Ridge Racers, is surprisingly good. The music was actually not too bad (got you into the game) and no offense but most Japanese music is...well...weird and this was actually alright. The announcer was sort of annoying but playing a game on a handheld with PS2 graphics, I didn't care. I didn't really notice the engine sounds, but they sounded alright.

I will give more impressions once I get into the world tour and such. (thats where you unlock cars and tracks I guess)

You do realize you made a big mistake if you plan on buying movies for that thing or other types of hardware add ons-mp3s,movies etc. they will be useless in North America. The games may not be region encoded but everything else is. Also the games very well could be region encoded its up to the developer. Also I want to add the games are region encoded for language.

The games may not be region encoded but everything else is. Also the games very well could be region encoded its up to the developer. Also I want to add the games are region encoded for language.
I don't want to put movies on it and I don't want to put mp3's on it since I have a mp3 player for that. If for some reason a lot of games released (that I want to get) are region coded, then I will trade in my PSP for an american one if need be, but I doubt I'll need to. (I've heard that almost all games are supposed to not be region coded)
