Lol I also buy games just cause they are on sale and maybe play once if I do then never touch it again.

This game is in my radar. I’m not a huge HP fan but I have seen the movies. But I love third person view games.

The game will be interesting to people who have read the books and watched the movies, only watched the movies, only read the books, and have no history with Harry Potter.

Do not let it being a "Harry Potter" game hold you back if it looks interesting.

I appreciate it. Can you maybe give a few reasons why it might appeal to someone like me that literally knows nothing at all about the series in any way?

I usually don't buy games day one anymore but reviews have been really good so I said what the heck. I played for about 15min and so far I'm digging it.

I am with you all the the way. Not a HP fan at all. A buddy of mine has been talking about for quite some time. Then I saw the trailer right after the holidays. So the other I said what the heck. I ave nothing on my immediate gaming radar. Forza Motorsport not even in sight right now. So I took the plunge.

WOW this game has me intrigued on what will happen next. Cool spells to learn, neat gear and abilities to unlock plus a huge open world. I have just my first day of class. Hell I wish regular school was this fun. So far I am hooked.

I gotta be honest, this game is everything I wanted it to be and then some.

I think the map *might* be bigger than RDR2.

It's a well done Wizard game, that is open world. Graphics are very well done (some stuff here and there are iffy, but not bad) and I'm in awe of this castle you get to go to school in.

Get to learn spells, cast them, learn potion making.

I mean, just basic level stuff this sounds like a cool game.

Also, don't let me fool you. I barely got into Harry Potter last year!

                  I would say:

                  Open world
                  Side content
                  Character creation
                  Fun combat
Huge map with a lot to explore
                  Character leveling
                  Gear upgrades
                  Transmogs/cosmetics

Don't need to know the history or lore to enjoy the game. Enjoy it as an open world game with lots to do.

Yes, there are easter eggs for those of us that are HP fans but it is not part of the story in any way. It's more of a 'hey cool' kind of thing.

I'm one of those people that has only seen the movies, and that was within the last few years. Never read the books or cared all that much about "Harry Potter" as a brand, but the overall appeal of the game goes beyond that, IMHO.

(I think I was slightly too old to be the original target audience when the movies first released even though the first book launched when I was 11)

                        Re: Hogwarts Legacy (2021)

Well, I found some additional details about the story which satisfied me enough to decide to purchase this after all, that along with just really wanting to find a reason to buy this game as someone who grew up with the books. I'm about 8 hours into it, and thought I'd share some thoughts for people on the fence with the full release tomorrow.

Overall it's a fun experience, but it isn't quite what I had hoped for when this game was announced.

                        Graphics - Beautiful

Character models are solid enough. The environments are stunning. I do wonder if some of the environment charm will be lost on those who are not fans. For instance, Hogwarts castle and the Quidditch pitch both look good, but part of my excitement is in recognizing familiar places. Even without the familiarity of the setting, there is no doubt that these environments and castle halls look great.

Combat - Fun and fluid with some challenge. "Bullet sponge" effect with a high chance of getting repetitive deeper into your playthrough.

Combat with a wand feels wholly unique and really good. It's somewhat challenging too. Don't expect anything like Dark Souls once you have become proficient at some of the combos and dodging/blocking system, but you are punished pretty severely for any mistakes which makes successful encounters feel rewarding.

Which makes me wish all the more for a "realism" mode like we get in Ghosts of Tsushima. Combos and spell work are fun and look great, but repeating a combo 2, 3 or even 4 times to kill basic enemies gets old fast. This becomes especially annoying when damage you take is quite severe. It's immersion breaking at that point on top of being repetitive.

                        Story - Mediocre.

Don't worry about prior knowledge of the wizarding world. It really isn't needed. There are plenty of easter eggs for fans of the books/movies that add a little extra excitement, but they really are not relevant.

The story still gets a poor score from me though for reasons that originally turned me off on the game. This line from IGN pretty much sums things up from their review, "Hogwarts Legacy has more plot holes than a fishnet stocking". If you can get past that though then there are some interesting elements. Some of the characters that you meet along the way are at least interesting.

Open World - Kind of, but very restricted

                        Can you go anywhere? Yes.
Can you interact with other NPCs, the world, or have other open world elements like those in a sandbox experience? No.

Don't expect to be able to attack your fellow students in the hall, adults in town, or even go up and talk to most characters in the world. This isn't GTA or the old school yard Rockstar game Bully. The game is very scripted and linear from this perspective. You can walk/fly just about anywhere inside of the game, which is great since the environments look so good, but don't expect anything like you would get from a Bethesda or Bioware game in terms of freedom and choice.

Dialog choices are also fairly limited and tame. I'm hoping that you can kind of make your character your own later on in the game as I know that the game has multiple endings. The early parts of the game don't really feel like you have any freedom though with most dialog options only having a marginal variance.

                        Overall

You don't need prior knowledge of HP to enjoy the game, but those with history in this setting will get more out of it.

Pros: I'm having fun. The story is what it is and I have to get over that. It's a lot of fun seeing the HP world though, and something about combat with a wand feels unique vs. other forms of fighting in games. Side quests are largely well done and provide some enjoyable interactions.

Cons: When this game was announced, I knew that you weren't going to be able to "avada kadavra" in the halls, but I was hoping for more ways to interact with other characters. Combat, while initially fun, does leave me wanting as my spells just don't feel like they have much weight behind them (I do expect spells unlocked later in the game to alleviate some of this).

So someone gifted this game to me. I never watch the movies nor read the books. When Harry Potter came out i was already a teenager and wasn’t into it. But wow i am blown away by this game. It got me wanted to get into the movies and the books. This weekend im going to start watching the movies. I am very happy with this game. I got it on the series x and turn on the graphic 4k version and omg it looks gorgeous. Loving this game can’t wait to see the movies

I decided to go PS5 over PC on this one. Early reports of PC performance no looking so hot...

I think this may be the first game I've jumped the backlog queue for since TLOU2, so I guess I'm pretty excited for it.

Never watched any of the movies, but I was obsessed with the first 4 books, I wanna say.. I think by the time the 5th book came around I was in high school and I guess too cool for Harry Potter, but I always regretted never finishing the story. I was thinking of giving the audiobooks a go at work if this game puts the HP bug back in me.

Also, it's all I can do to hold back the dad level jokes about a Transmog system in this game.
                              Now, more than ever
