Finally giving historical open world games a chance (PS4). Have questions

I'm more into a modern open world games (20th/21st century), but I am thinking of playing some of those historical open world RPGs (or non-RPGs).

But what I am specifically looking for in open world games:

    1. How alive the world is - do NPCs have daily routines and are they dynamic? Can you observe/follow NPCs and be inpressed with them living their lives?
    2. Nice decent size map with varied locations - cities, country, forests, snowy areas etc.
    3. Interesting story would be great, but not a must. I play open world games for the living-breathing experience, not for the story. But it's definitely a plus.

I'm considering RDR2, just looking for more options.

    Thanks!

I'll tell you one thing, if you start with RDR2 then no world from any subsequent game will match that standard.

Say what you want about the story and gameplay of RDR2, but the world that Rockstar built on that game is the GOAT and that's no exaggeration.

I know how you love for worlds to feel alive and it's why you loved Watch Dogs 2. Red Dead 2 is incredible in that department.

Thanks, that's great hear. I've read that Kingdom Come has some interesting NPC system, but still haven't seen it in action. Hard to find videos that demonstrate this.

I've yet to play the game. It's on my wishlist, but I've never gotten around to it. I have too heard it has a well done world, but I couldn't say firsthand if it does or not.

Skyrim would seem to be the most obvious choice. Like RDR2 it is very much a living/breathing world. This is true for all of the Elder Scrolls games, but especially for the ones since Morrowind. Skyrim benefits from better technology and experience with game building, but Morrowind offers more overall freedom for the player. Morrowind has very little (if any) voice acting from what I recall though.

Outworlds and Fallout are also going to be like the Elder Scrolls games, but more sci-fi.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is another solid choice. I never got super far into that game, but from what I played I think it fits what you are looking for.

Never played any of them, didn't think it was open world with NPCs. But I did watch some gameplay videos and it looks beautiful.

I loved the world of Days Gone. Not sure if it fully meets your criteria. But one of the things I loved about the game was how driving from point A to point B could be it's own adventure.

I would sit down for 45 minutes to drive from one mission to another and only be able to complete the drive between missions because of all that would happen during the drive. It's standard zombie apocalypse fare, but I felt it was well executed and within the context of that world it worked.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am not a big fan of zombie games. Also looking for a non-apocalyptic world. I like living-breathing worlds full of life.

It's very sad to me that about 80% of the new open world games are set in apocalyptic worlds. But I guess it's the trend now and it's easier/cheaper to create such a worlds.

There's always the Assassin's Creed games. They meet basically all your requirements. At least some of the last few.

Black Flag- pirates, so there's a lot of sailing and naval combat
                        Syndicate- 19th century England
                        Origins- Ancient Egypt
                        Odyssey- Ancient Greece
                        Valhalla- 9th Century England
                        Boston Red Sox

Thanks. I have AC Syndicate, it has an amazing world. I have actually spent more time exploring and observing than actually playing the game.
Interested in AC BF, actually find the naval combat to be awesome, so I might get it.
Also looked at AC Unity which had amazing crowds and interiors, so it may be a solid purchase. As long as it runs well enough on the PS4.

Need to see more of the newer AC games.

There are some solid choices here.

I will say this first. I had a friend that played Red Read Redemption 2 and beat it then asked me for other games like it. I will say that there are not other games like RDR2. So that is a category by itself.

Also like you, I am not into the zombie game category.

RDR2: As I just said, this is the epitome of an open world game in a historical setting that feels alive.

The Witcher 3: The world feels alive and lived in as a medieval style world. The cities feel lived in and populated.

Skyrim: Also fits into the same type of category as The Witcher 3.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey: The world of Greece feels alive. People are just living out their lives and it is cool to see.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Another solid world of old England. I haven't finished it yet and am no where close but the cities I have been to feel alive.

Horizon Zero Dawn: This is an apocalyptic world but the world is scattered with small outposts and has a great vibe to it. Again, may not be what you want but it is an amazing open world game.

Ghosts of Tsushima: I am only part way through but the world is gorgeous. When you reach a settlement, it feels lived in.

Spiderman: Though not really historical, it is fun to traverse above the buildings or down on the ground. The streets are full of people and it gives you a full world feel. Plus the game is awesome.

Though not just historical, the above games all offer open worlds that feel alive.
