I don't know about you guys, but this has to be the most fun I've ever had with a simulation ever. A very absorbing, detailed, rewarding game. There is a learning curve specially with higher realism settings, but once you get over that, this game really shines.

I picked up sh3 and brothers in arms for the pc the same day. I haven't touched BIA yet.

it's very fulfilling when you sink a ship, gotta love that feeling.

I'm still getting used to the career mode, having a bit of trouble finding things to attack in my zone. I'll keep at it though. One question, if I stumble on an enemy ship on the way to my patrol zone can I sink it? or am I limited to things in the zone they send me?

you can sink it. You really don't even have to go to your patrol zone if you put up the numbers to make bdu happy.

Finding convoys of ships is usually done by looking at the paper map and sitting in a convoy route, or at some point bdu (headquarters) will send you a radiogram telling you about a nearby convoy.

Finding ships in the middle of nowhere requires use of the hyrdrophone at periscope depth or deeper at all stop. You can hear ships as far away as 20 km sometimes. Usually 10-15 km away seems to be the norm though. Get to your patrol zone, make any kind of course around the zone and stop listen every once in a while. I usually try to do it 3 times a day at least. Also if you are playing early in the war, things don't tend to pick up for a year or so.

Subsim forums is a great place for talking about this game and getting tips and mods.
