The difference between those though is that nintendo has been using some of these same characters for at least a decade while the ones for other companies have only had a couple of games out. I don't know, maybe I don't like the actual characters and not the game. I'm all for sequels to good games but when they have the same formula for 20+ years(mario) it's time to go. Really though, the only big problem I have with nintendo is that they fail to realize that what they think up isn't what consumers all want. They still don't believe that online gaming is something that we want.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Well, at least you (sort of) admitted it.

And by the way, just having a character IN a game(i.e. Mario) doesn't mean the game has the same "formula". Mario has been in a ton of games where there are different objectives, styles of play, controls, storylines, etc. The Paper Mario game is different from Mario golf, different from Mario Sunshine, etc.

Also, you hit on the reason why the other characters haven't been as visible: they have been out/successful long enough. If some company is able to create a character that can have the sustainable success/visibility that Mario has, you're kidding yourself if you don't think that same company will still be using it 20 years down the line. Just like Solid Snake(although the character is nowhere near Mario in fame). The first "Solid Snake" game was released in 1987. Almost 20 years ago!

They actually think or are trying to convince themselves, that consumers don't want to play online. Either they are really stupid (look at the numbers from xbox live) or they are deliberately looking the other way. I don't see how they can actually believe that.
You got it. Also no one has been able to tell me how the DS slogan is good.

They've been successfull and I think it's cool that they have re-makes but seriously, I am sick and tired of Mario Party.

I could be wrong but I do beleive Mario 64 basically revolutionised the 3d platforming genre.

Also it messed up the franchise to me. Mario 64 isn't a true Mario game to me. 3d completely changes the game. I would LOVE for Nintendo to make a game like played like Mario World and looked as sharp as Paper Mario. I would have already bought a Gamecube if that existed.
