Re: Splinter Cell > Metal Gear Solid

MGS started the whole stealth craze along with thief in 98'. When you look at top 50 games ever you'll always see MGS #10 or above. The storyline is simply one of the best tales ever told on any medium and everything about it was ahead of the curve. SC builds upon that and goes for more realism, but it feels to calculated and dry compared to MGS. The metal gear games also always have set pieces and characters you'll never forget...when you hear the name raiden you won't think about MK you'll think about MG. SC is also very good gameplay wise, but is bogged down by trial and error and lack of bosses...now CT doesn't have save points and finally has branching points but it should't of taken Ubi soft that long to figure that out. Plus how many times do people replay MGS 1/2 with all the extras/difficulties/VR missions compared to the first two SC. SC has multiplayer(PT was too glitchy to have real staying power) and a nice camera, but otherwise I'd take MG any day.

I felt MGS was an action game 1st with Stealth 2nd while SC was the exact opposite of this. MGS had better boss battles imo because it's more of an action game stressing boss battles while SC stresses going undetected when possible. I loved SC and MGS, but was dissappointed by PT(multiplayer really saved it) and MGS2(I despised the main character and just wanted the game to end). I have not had the chance to play MGS3, but I did play SC3. I felt SC3 will be a massive leap over the 1st 2 SC's.
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

Splinter Cell owes MGS for starting the stealth genre.

Actually, I think the MG series dates all the way back to the 8-bit Nintendo days.
