    Backward Compatibilty

Can anyone explain why a console maker(Sony,MS) would make a new console that is not backward compatible(sp)?

I am not a tech head, but I know that backwards compatibility limits the ability to utilize the new system to its fullest. Compromises have to be made to ensure backwards compatibility.

Backwards compatibility is also not normally a determining factor for most. I know with my PS2 I played maybe 1 psone game.

I am sure that it's not really a determining factor, but at the same time, it definitely helps with launches of new systems. If you don't have a ton of games at launch, or people don't want to buy too many games at that time, it leave people with a nice option to be able to go back and play your old games.

I think this is what helped PS2 when it initially came out. You not only had a good amount of new PS2 launch titles to play with, but also your entire collection of PS1 stuff.

I for one think that it would be nice if they continued this backward compatibility on future systems. It also makes sense financially.
