I am sure that it's not really a determining factor, but at the same time, it definitely helps with launches of new systems. If you don't have a ton of games at launch, or people don't want to buy too many games at that time, it leave people with a nice option to be able to go back and play your old games.
I think this is what helped PS2 when it initially came out. You not only had a good amount of new PS2 launch titles to play with, but also your entire collection of PS1 stuff.
I for one think that it would be nice if they continued this backward compatibility on future systems. It also makes sense financially.Comment
