One thing I'd recommend, which helped me, is to chew on teabags to minimize the bleeding. It actually helps!

Re: Anyone ever had their wisdom teeth taken out?
I had all four out under general anesthesia in the oral surgeon's office. Mine were deeply rooted, so the dentist said he nearly had to use a crowbar!
Mouth is really sore for about four or five days, with liquids and soft foods during that time. You'll bleed, and it will hurt. My face swelled, big-time. I was Alvin the Chipmunk.
After four days or so, it's no sweat. About the only strange, lasting sensation is your desire to stick the tip of your tongue in the four holes in your gums for about a month afterward until they fill in.
When your oral surgeon tells you to keep the holes clean until they fill, listen to him. Use the Listerine often to keep those babies clean. You DON'T want those holes getting infected -- then you're in for some painful trouble.
If you need to get all four removed, then do it in one shot. Don't have two done now and two later. You don't want to go through this twice. And ask for general anesthesia. You don't want to be awake when an oral surgeon is ripping big-azz teeth out of your gums.
Good luck. Getting my wisdom teeth pulled was one of the best things I've done. I had terrible headaches from the impacted teeth, and I delayed getting them pulled for a good 18 months before doing it.
Take care,

Originally posted by nemesis04Do they bother you? I still have mine in and the dentist said to me if they do not bother me and are not inflaming my gums, he is not taking them out. My wife was adamant that they were coming out and when I told her they were staying she seemed disappointed. I think she wanted to see me in pain.
I heard they PUSH your normal teeth forward and can mess up your whole mouth. either thats a lie or the doctor isnt telling you the truth.Comment

Re: Anyone ever had their wisdom teeth taken out?
I don't take gas well, so I had to have this operation while awake. Not fun...it was pretty sore for a couple of days, but no lasting effects, except that some food may get stuck in there for a couple of weeks after (I think I had more teeth removed, so that just might be with me).Blue Jays, Blackhawks, AuburnComment

Re: Anyone ever had their wisdom teeth taken out?
Wasn't too bad for me, I got there, they put me out and I woke up later on my couch not even remembering how I got home, use the gauze as much as you need it (I needed a lot), I drank lots of milkshakes just because I didn't feel like eating regular food for about 2 days. I overslept my pain killer once and when I woke up my jaw was in some pretty bad pain so make sure to take them (unless you aren't in pain at all). Also make sure to keep the holes clean, don't want an infection, either use listerine or warm water with salt to rinse it (after each meal is best since you can feel food stuck in the holes).Favorite Teams:

Re: Anyone ever had their wisdom teeth taken out?
I had 4 wisdom teeth and a root canal gone wrong all pulled at the same time. I couldn't take any gas because the mask made me clostrophobic so I was watching the whole thing.
Really... it hurts for a few days... no doubt. But just follow all of the Doctor's orders and you'll be fine. Schedule it for like a Thursday afternoon and take the Friday off. You'll be fine by Monday. Just don't **** around and get dry socket and you'll be fine.Listen to The Remodeling Clay Podcast!

Re: Anyone ever had their wisdom teeth taken out?
I only used painkillers for two doses, on the day of the surgery. Stupid, I know, but I hate the way painkillers make me feel sluggish and ropey. I prefer to get that feeling with other vices ...

Re: Anyone ever had their wisdom teeth taken out?
Yeah it just depends on the person me and my girlfriend got ours took out within a week of each other. She got hers out first and it really didn't bother her. So I was like " Okay maybe this isn't going to hurt as much as I thought.'' It ended up being the most painful thing I have ever been through. I was miserable for about two weeks, and this is coming from a guy who has tore his ACL in both knees.
Hopefully yours will be less painful than my experience."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

Re: Anyone ever had their wisdom teeth taken out?
Here's a horror story, I mean a tale of caution. I got them out just before my 23rd birthday. During the procedure, I woke up to find the dentist with his knee in my chest yanking away, that explained the chest bruises. I kept ice on one side while I passed out at home. The other side, the ice fell off while I was sleeping. So it looked like I had a Lenny Dykstra sized wad of chew in my mouth for 2 days. The side the ice stayed on was back to normal the next day.
OK so on to the caution. I still could still barely open my mouth when we all went to Friday's after work for my B-day. I got wasted doing a bunch of shots and apparantly ate some popcorn. Well around 4am the bed started spinning and I got up and ralphed. *Pop* *pop* *Rip* As I tore the stitches out during one of the heaves. To add insult to injury I had popcorn mashed into my sockets and mixed with vomit caused a nasty infection about 3 days later. I went back to the dentist and he used a metal tool to sqeeze the infectious liquid out of my gums. Some of it went down my throat which caused another episode. Moral of the story, when they tell you to eat sof foods and take it easy, that's probably a good idea.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment
