Forgive my ignorance, but... what's a sciatica, and what does a sciatica giving out entail?

My dad had a real bad problem with that, he literally couldn't sit up in a chair or stand up for about 2 months, so I know first hand how bad it can be. He practically had to lay down all day. The best thing that worked for him was that the chiropractor gave him certain excersises to do every day and that seemed to make it better, the medication really didn't have much of an effect.

Hopefully it's not a herniated disk. I had sciatica really bad a few years ago (or at least I thought it was sciatica). After going to the doctor and getting an MRI, it turned out that I actually had a herniated L4-L5 disk that was pushing on the sciatic nerve. Don't mess around with that.

I have back problems, back when i was in high school playing tennis I messed up one of my vertebrae. To this day I can't stand up in the same place for more than 20 minutes without my back killing me.

I crushed my hip bone playing BBall when I came down just right to put a dent in the ball of my hip bone. Basically same thing that happened to Bo Jackson. Anyway, the Dr. says I'm too young for a hip replacement so I just deal with it. But it sometimes causes my hip to wiggle out of joint and touch that nerve. Supisingly the pain is in my shin. So bad that it feels like my shin is shattered. It almost feels like I am going to throw up it gets so bad.

I went to physical therapy and a Chiropractor. Both helped. The physical therapist rubbed the outside of my thigh with his fist until he had somehow alleviated the pain. The he gave me a big rubberband and some stretching exercises. I would recommend doing the strecthes and exercises rather than taking the pain meds. I won't touch those, they can mess with you on many different levels.

Maybe it's tennis. I also played tennis for years and my back problems started early in college. At that time, I got a cortizone shot. I didn't have any serious back pain until about 10 years later when it flared up again. That's when I had the MRI done. They said Cortizone wouldn't do it that time, so I ended up getting 2 epidural shots. So far so good and that was about 6 years ago. I still have occasional lower back pain, but I really concentrate on how I lift things, sleep with a pillow between my knees, do stretching exercises, etc. and it doesn't hurt too bad. Back pains are nothing to ignore though.

Well I had an MRI done last night and went to back to my docotr today, and thats exactly what I have a L4-L5 herniated disk, and that why I'm getting pain through my leg, disk is so herniated that it's putting pressure on my sciatica nerve, I will have to go to some sessions to get this back on track.

Hopefully they can get it feeling better with some exercises, but usually with herniation, you need something to bring down the swelling, i.e. cortizone or epidural. I'll say a prayer for you. I know first hand about this stuff. Definitely no fun.

Man don't even mention sciatica around me. I still shudder at that damn word. I had it when I was 18-19 years old and it was the most painful thing I've ever gone through and I've had tons of sports-related injuries.

I couldn't sleep through a night for over a month, couldn't stay in the same position (sitting/standing/laying) for more than 15 minutes w.o extreme pain. It'd feel like someone was jarring a knife into my lower back and electrical currents shooting down my left leg. Just awful.

This is my exact condition and what led to the end of my college basketball career....

I'm going thru this exact thing...since late DECEMBER!!!

I have a recurring back problem from a couple ruptured discs that happened about 5 years ago...

I go to the chiro a for a few visits a couple times a year and I'm 'good to go' for a while...

This time, I got on an airplane after seemingly recovering from the latest round of chiro visits and the cabin pressure herniated the L5...

Yup...cabin pressure...just as some folks feet swell on a 'plane, my tender disc blew up and out pinching the sciatic nerve BADLY...

My vacation was runined...spent the whole time taking pain pills and lying on the floor on an icepack...

Got back home and began a 3 visit per week scedule with my chiro that has been reduced...but is still ongoing...

I am finally at about 90% so I will be adding physical therapy to the rehab 'mix'...

                              Bottom line:

Pills won't help...they mask the symptoms but can't solve the problem...you also have a false confidence in your progress when you can't feel the pain...

Chiro (make sure it's a good one) will help considerably...

Get on the P.T. train asap...Physical Therapy will not only help, but you'll learn how to exercise in a 'preventative' manner...

Strengthen your 'core'...ab strength will counter a weak back...

Lastly, NEVER agree to ANY type of surgury for this...everyone I've ever met that went that route regrets it...

Good luck...and be a 'paitient' paitient...this is a 'season ending' type inj...it will take a while to recover...

And keep up with the preventitive measures...you're never going to fully 'recover'...

You'll have to monitor this situation from this point forward...
