I've thought of getting into sports marketing, but ultimately I've decided to pursue something in the personnel department of teams. I'm looking into scouting and player personnel positions and hopefully i'll get some contacts in the next few months to help me out in my search.

Re: Any Sports Marketers here, or aspiring to be one?
Yeah, I know I have to go into Law School and all of that. I'm sure there is Contract Law or Sports Law offered at some of the Law Schools around the nation. Sometimes my mind tells me that it might not be the best to go the sports agent route since you need to be pretty cutthroat and a jerk and it's not part of my personality.
Discussing sports (obviously) is just great, so maybe Sports Journalism might be the way to go. What's better than watching sports and then being paid to talk about 'em?Comment

Truer words never have been spoken. Take it from an ex-sports journalist who moved to sports PR for the above reasons, especially the hours and the pay. I work just as hard in PR as I did in journalism, but I make twice the money and don't work many nights or weekends and no holidays. Be prepared to do all of that if you work in journalism.Originally posted by HerbsinatorBut journalism includes hard work, long hours and low pay.

Um, for all of those who said they're interested in sports journalism, good for you. The world could always use better and more intelligent sports journalists. By the way, Indiana University and Ohio University have good J-schools as well.
Having said that, you need to know what you're getting into because it's not for everybody. I'm a sports journalist, so if you have any questions, please PM me. I do not want to discourage anybody from the sports journalism industry, but I also hate to see somebody go through 4 years of college just to get a job at a paper and realize they hate it. It's not for everybody. You got questions, I got answers.Lux y VeritasComment

Writing Press Releases, Media Guides, and that type of stuff...is what PR is...I majored in Sport Studies in college and basically wasted 4 years of college because I hated the industry...I work in Youth Recreation programs now and have a ton of fun doing that.Comment

Thinking off the top of my head of some of the things I have to do:Originally posted by TheMatrix31PK...what exactly goes under the heading of "Sports PR"?
-- Writing, distributing press releases
-- Planning, writing, editing media guides
-- Compiling and distributing statistics
-- Planning, writing, editing event programs
-- Planning, coordinating and executing Video News Releases
-- Crisis management for the company or franchise
-- Hiring, leading temporary event media staff
-- Keeping daily contact with key media
-- Cultivating media members to encourage more coverage of your franchise
-- Coordination of Internet activities
-- Coordinating internal photographic coverage of events for PR purposes
-- Organizing and executing media functions, such as press conferences and photo opportunities
Zlax may have had a bad experience, and that's too bad. But sports PR is a GREAT career choice. I love it -- wouldn't want to do anything else.
Take care,

Most agents are lawyers. So you'll need to go pre-law and then pass the bar.
For a sports journalism career, you need to go to school for either journalism or mass communications with a concentration in journalism. There are some who didn't take that route and landed in sports writing, but they're usually at smaller papers or guys that started in the business 30 to 40 years ago as copy boys.

Funny thing is: you DON'T need to be a lawyer to be an agent. For most leagues, all you need is a client. Each league has their own guidelines about registering and meeting certain requirements. Now, obviously it would HELP, but you don't need it. I took a Sports Law class and that was one thing that suprised me.MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies
NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers
NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins
NBA: Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic
NCAA: Penn State Nittany Lions, Boston College EaglesComment
