TJ, NCiLB is complete horse****, I mean, I'm all for getting kids to do well. But taking away accreditation from public schools that have one kid fail? That's not fair to any of the other kids at the school, and could completely ruin their future. Honestly, I've always hated standardized testing, and I don't think that we should be learning just to take it.

Most commonly misspelled word for me is "receiver". I always spell it with the I after C. Yeah, yeah. I know the rule. I put it on my hate list.

most of the time here at OS, its for fun and I sometimes dont have alot of time to worry about checking my spelling. if its that big of an issue and my posts aren't readible, then I could see an issue in it. but mispelling here or there is not a big deal. school reports, emails to loved ones, or people you need to impress; i could see that need to check constantly. but if peopel can read it, then i dont see an issue

Apparently Leinart is a difficult name to spell.

          Lienhart, Lienart, Linehart, Leinhart...

Resign/re-sign is one I see a lot on sports boards...

I have trouble sometimes with 'necessary', I always want to put an extra 'c' in there.

Also, it's/its and who's/whose. I know the differences, but I still use them incorrectly sometimes.

Same with my sister, who has been an elementary school teacher for 21 years. In fact, I have spoken with no teacher who thinks "No Child Behind" is worth a sh*t.

The proper name of that program should be "No Standardized Test Left Behind." We're creating a nation of test-takers. Oh, boy, we should be so proud.

                  Ruben:

You have more than 10,000 posts in here. Seems to me that you probably write more in here than you do for school or e-mail, so bad habits here definitely will carry over to the important stuff.

                  Just my 6 cents.

Why can't we go back to the good old days when "No Child Left Behind" only applied to the really good athletes!?!?!?!?

I agree, grammar as a whole definitely seems to be on the decline due to the reasons previously mentioned (standardized tests being the big one).

When I'm writing a paper, email, posting on a message board, etc. I usually do my best to make sure I get my spelling and grammar correct.

When I'm text messaging I don't really care, I just want to say what I want to say quickly so I'll use acronyms and stuff like that. Even when I'm using AIM or MSN I'll use internet lingo but I make sure to spell my actual words correctly, some of the stuff people type on AIM/MSN is a headache to read through though with all the errors.

My parents always made me study my spelling lists throughout elementary school and it definitely helped out in the long run, and I made the spelling bee two years in a row back in 5th and 6th grade!

Re: Enywon hear knowtis knobuddy kan spell enymor?

I'm not surprised.....The US school system, as a whole, is failing miserably. Last I heard, only about half our kids even graduate. But I view it more of a societal problem, not a school problem per se.

I just feel that kids today (ok, I'm 23, so I'm still young) don't want to learn for learnings sake anymore. Even when I was in middle school, I wanted to learn because I wanted to be smart That was the only incentive I really needed. Now, that seems uncommon and it's almost as if we provide other incentives anymore just to get kids interest.

I hate to sound hokey, but in our world of ipod, xbox live, HDTV, on-demand movies, wireless internet, etc, learning history or math just isn't all that fun. I graduated from HS in 2000, and the amount of gadgets that kids have today have probably increased 10-fold. I never had a cell phone until college (and when I did, there was no text messaging, camera, etc.), the first mp3 players were in their infancy my senior year of HS (and only one geeky kid in my HS had one), hell laptops were pretty impractical at the time for the most part.

It's crazy to me how many ways there are for kids to waste their time now. School/learning now has to be captivating enough to get and keep the kids attention, which seems to be harder and harder to do. When I was growing up, it was TV and videogames mainly, and my parents made sure I didn't play too much. Now, it can hard for even involved parents to keep their kids on track.

Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now......

                          I have the perfect solution...

                          blame videogames.

What? That doesn't work in this situation? People blame videogames for all sort of things....why not blame them for murdering kids' usage of grammar?

I'm a kid but I use proper grammar/spelling on message boards.

I know many people my age that use proper english on the internet like me.

I hate standardized tests... to compare me to other students?

I care about learning what I learn, learning different trades, not learning how to take a test.
