Need some advice guys re: Ebay

Not trying to sell anything here, and I don't know what the forum's policy is on anything re: Ebay-oriented material.

In any case, I'm selling a Runco PFP-11 scaler on ebay. I have a few offers, but I was wondering if there's any tips on how to keep from getting ripped off.

I'm sure one of the offers made was bogus and a scam, since it involved changing the terms of my deal and sending the item to Nigeria of all places.

Another one I'm not so sure about. I've checked the guy's feedback, which wasn't much, just 6 people giving feedback, but they were all positive. He said he'd pay me through Paypal just like I requested, but he made an offer outside of the auction itself for a couple hundred more than the starting bid (nobody has actually bid on it, I've just received offers through e-mail looking to deal without being involved in a bidding war).

If this is a violation of forum policy though, I apologize, I just wanted some advice on how to deal with this. It's my first attempt at selling anything through ebay and I'm just wary of the situation.

Re: Need some advice guys re: Ebay

I would only deal with those that are willing to have the item sent to their eBay/PayPal address, and also would not do business with those that offer "outside" deals or arrangements.

If you are suspicious of a person, don't sell it to them. I'd report them to eBay and see what kind of feedback you get from customer service.

Do not accept any offer outside of ebay, especially one in which the guy is offering to pay more than current price. People just don't spend more money than they have to. I would simply ignore all of these offers, with a simple "Outside deals are against ebay policy, and I'm not trying to get ripped off here." if you want to talk to the guy. Just let your auction continue to run.

Just let the auction run and only ship once you get payed...that way you won't get ripped off.

who pay more for something with no bids?

if you do use paypal, ship to only CONFIRMED ADDRESSES, and only to that address on the paypal website, and use online trackable shipping method, like Delivery Confirmation by USPS.

Here's how the "overpayment" scam works.

The high bidder sends you a check after going over the scam. He'll tell you in an email that he's sending you more, that you should cash the check and send the excess off to another address. He makes up a counterfeit check, you cash it, send the extra to him, and then the check bounces and you're out your item and the payment for it.

Maybe Im misunderstanding, but why would a check bounce if you have cashed it? I thought checks bounce when there isn't enough money in the writer's account to cash it in the first place?

Agree with the confirmed address bit.

The check wouldn't bounce but would come back as there not being an account at that bank or account number and you'd get charged for it since you cashed the check.

My listing explicitly states Paypal only. And I'll definitely keep an eye out for scammers of course.

I think I might edit my listing actually to state that bidders should have confirmed addresses on Paypal or they shouldn't bother bidding.

Thanks for all the great advice again.

All the scams that are run on EBAY are the primary reason I don't sell anything on there anymore. I put up my PS2 on EBAY and got like ten Nigerian scammers and a couple like the one mentioned in this thread. It just wasn't worth the hassle in the end.

I've only boughten a handful of things of ebay and never sold anything. My experiences are largely good but ebay has become more of a pain than anything. It seems that good deals are rare. If they do seem good, wait until you look at the shipping charges. Everybody is trying to make all their money off of shipping. It also seems a lot of companies are dominating the action and the offers after shipping usually push me to just buying new from a local store.

I was looking at some DS games on ebay and they were listed as a Buy Now for around C$20 (Canadian). That sounded great until I did a double check on the shipping. Despite the fact the company's home base is allegedly Vancouver, all prices are listed in pounds! That's twice what the Canadian dollar is worth and they wanted $20 shipping on each cartridge they mailed within the country! (it said $9.99 shipping which I thought was high until I realized it was pounds). I've shipped DVDs to my brother across the country for less than $5 including the packaging. These ripoffs just turn me off of ebay.
