Whats important is you break down your muscle fibers, it doesnt matter how - once you break them down they are good to rebuild and grow.
Do cardio regardless of what lazy bastards will tell you. Cardio will make you bigger, WHY because the stronger your cardiovascular system is the better nutrients and protein uptake will be in your system. Plus the stronger your heart, the better the blood flow, the more reps you can do = the bigger you get.
Anything that hurts = avoid doing it. I dont care what some idiot tells you about a certain lift. We all have different builds and certain lifts may cause pain which will eventually lead to injury.
You need to avoid injury at all costs.
