Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.
Anyone here have a iron gym? That thing really works for chin ups/pull ups/sit ups. If you don't have room for alot of stuff this thing works hanging on the door. The dips seem to be to low IMO. But that's all i have to work with right now. Just starting to workout how many REPS should i be doing?

I know i'm out of shape. But do yall work out every day? This is my 4th nite of working my arms/abs and doing cardio exercise. I feel like my arms are going to fall off. My Abs hurt when i get up from sitting. I been doing 2 hrs at nite a hour of working my arms/abs/ by doing chain ups/pull ups/sit ups/dips/push ups and some dumbbells. Then a hour of cardio(tae bo right now).Last edited by babythug23; 01-11-2009, 11:33 PM.Comment

Er, why in the world are you doing your arms and abs for four consecutive days? All your muscles need rest and time to recover (and grow), including your abs. You are doing yourself a disservice but continuing to work them so frequently. But yes, you probably are out of shape.
As for me, I try to do some form of exercise every single day; basketball, raquetball, swimming, lifting and yoga are my weekly activities."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

When you lift weights you are basically causing tiny tears in the muscle fibre. As this regrows it gets slightly bigger each time which after much training results in bigger muscles. If you train the same muscle group everyday you aren't giving your body any time to heal and grow.
If you are a beginner i would suggest a fullbody weights workout 3 x per week for the first 6 months and cardio 4-7 x per week if you are trying to drop fat. It's great being enthusiastic and wanting to train for 2 hours a day but trust me from personal experience it's too hard to maintain and you'll end up saying "stuff it, it's too hard" and go back to your old habits. Something like this will do to start with imo: http://www.scoobysworkshop.com/schedbeginning.htmComment

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.
Personally i think the key to any successful program is sustainability. If it's not something you can adapt to as a lifestyle and as a permanent change then it's doomed to failure. I've seen so many people (and done it myself) where you start out at a hectic pace and end up giving up after one or two months.
Eat healthy, watch your portions, cut out soda, do weights at least a few times per week and do some form of cardio 5-7 times if losing fat and 2-4 times for basic health and you'll be good to go. Even if it seems easy to put on weight it still takes time to do it (you'd have to be pretty unhealthy to put over 50lbs in year) but if you watch what you eat and excersize it's easy to loose one pound per week (so after a year you are down 50lbs if you stick with it).
Just takes dedication, commitment and time...Comment

Nah that will quickly lead to burnout and overtraining imo. You need to give your muscles time to heal and recover because that is when they actually grow.

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.
Yeah you can always step it up a notch if you feel it's starting to get too easy for you.
Just remember that being in shape is at least 80% diet. The old saying of "you are what you eat" and "abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym" are very true. You could have all the muscle in the world but if you are 18% body fat or higher your not going to look your best.
I have a hard time controlling my appetite so it's a constant struggle for me to keep my weight in check. I love excersize and find it easy and enjoyable to do weights and cardio but i tend to slip on the diet (and alcohol) side of things. It's not easy but then again if it was easy everyone would have an 8 pack.Comment
