Lol i thought a cafe steamer was some sort of coffee or cappuccino or something. I just googled it and it is a healthy choice type frozen meal. Makes more sense now.

I was thinking "why is Kearnzo having 400 calories of coffee and wheat thins for lunch"

That would be a hell of a lot of coffee.

Or an Iced Peppermint White chocolate mocha from starbucks

400 cals right there! Some of those things have over 500 cals for a large cup.

Here's an interesting read about debunking many of the commonly health body building / weight loss / fasting beliefs.

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

Got a question about what to eat, if anything, before cardio. My plan, starting tomorrow, is to wake up around 4:30pm, and be hitting the exercise bike by 5. Going by my diet plan, the last thing I will have eaten would have been back at 6 or so in the morning. Should I drink my protein shake right when I wake up, and then do the cardio about a half hour after? I had planned to do so, but I don't know if i'm missing out on getting more protein into my body right AFTER the workout. My next meal after I hit the exercise bike is planned for around 7pm, so it would be a couple hours after i'm finished up working out.

My question is, if i'm not looking to really build muscle (I will be doing bodyweight workouts Tuesday and Thursday, just to tone a little), is it incredibly important to get more protein in after my workout, or will having a shake a half hour before be good enough? I'd rather have the shake before to get a little energy in my body, but if it's more important to have it after, I can try to throw a quick snack in right before. Thanks fellas.

Personally i'd prefer to do the workout completely fasted for maximum fat loss while your glycogen stores are already low but if you feel more comfortable having the shake first then do that.

To be honest people often stress over the little things but at the end of the day the main thing is that you actually do the cardio and not if you have a pre or post workout shake.

People have to keep in mind that even something that digests pretty quick like whey protein still takes hours to be fully absorbed into the blood stream so it's not like you drink a shake -> and it goes straight into your biceps. As long as you keep a decent amount of protein in your system to keep muscle and keep the cals low enough you will lose weight.

I neglected calcium in my diet for a long time. This combined with me being a caffeine junkie just burned me the hell out after 8-10 years of lifting.

I started supplementing a calcium + Vitamin D and I can feel my energy and motivation start coming back.

The whole lean gains intermittent fasting thing is an awesome read, cant wait to try it out.

Interesting re the cal + vitamin D supps. I take a multi but i've heard magnesium can be beneficial in reducing DOMS. I know calcium is great for bone / teeth strength etc and you take vitamin d to help with calcium absorption don't you?

Good to hear you are getting your motivation etc back.

Yeah that whole leangains approach really has me intrigued. Goes so much against what we have been taught in traditional bodybuilding circles for so long. If anything i just makes me stress less about food etc and not worry so much if i have to miss a meal because of work or something. So much to learn in this field it really is never ending.....

I think what i'll end up doing is having a shake right when I get up, cardio about a half hour later, and then some plain oats a little bit after that. I forgot I picked oats up this weekend, and i'm hearing they are great for recovery after cardio.

I love me some oats. I eat them for b'fast 5 days per week.

What i do is mix 1 scoop of protein powder (using Vanilla at the moment), 1 cup of dry oats and mix it together. Drop in one cup of LF milk and mix it all up. I then put in the microwave for 90 seconds and mix it up again once it comes out. I then add a handful of blueberries and a sprinkle of cinnamon and splenda and it's good to go. Almost tastes too good to be healthy.

                            My morning shake is:

                            Water + ice
                            1 scoop chocolate casein
                            1 tbsp natty PB
1 tbsp sugar free fat free chocolate jello pudding mix
                            1 cup oats

Pretty damn good to me. Gonna add some ground flax seed in it tomorrow. I really like that stuff.

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

Well, today was the first day of my workout, and it couldn't have gone worse

I woke up at 4:30, had a protein shake (2 servings skim milk, 1 scoop whey) right when I woke up, then hit the exercise bike for some high intensity interval training at around 5:10. I finished the routine in about 20 minutes, cooled down, then wound up getting rather dizzy, throwing up, and heading back to bed for about an hour.

I'm assuming I just flat out pushed too hard in my workout. I consider myself to be in decent shape, so I assumed I could jump right in to the routine without problems, but it's obvious I need to get in better shape first.

I also think that a protein shake filled with milk before rigorous cardio might not have been the best idea. Do you guys have any ideas for a pre cardio snack/breakfast, which I could follow up with a shake after the workout? I was thinking oats, but i'm not sure. What do you guys think? If I have a breakfast first, and then a shake, both within an hour of waking up, i'll need to cut some calories later in the day.

Ok man would you go freakin run after drinking a big class of milk? That's basically what you did!

Sugar free fat free jell-o is the key to making protein shakes with water more bearable. Seriously. Do it.
