    Do vitamins really work??

    Hey guys,

I went to Costco today and purchased $40 worth of vitamins: A daily multivitamin pack, fish oil, and flaxseed pill. Not until recently have I been taking more than a multi-vitamin, but was wondering if they really do work? Just curious as to your thoughts.

    Thanks.

I take a daily multivitamin. Since i've started taking it, I havn't gotten sick and have generally felt better. Not sure about fish old though!

What exactly does fish oil and flaxseed oil help with?

Both fish oil and flaxseed have the 3 omega-3 vitamins that are supposed really healthy. I really don't know that much myself, but was hoping we have a medical doctor onboard who could lead me to the right direction.

Same here. I take GNC Megaman vitamins. I take one in the morning and one in the evening with food.

My trainer told me fish oil was good, so I take it in liquid form. Make sure you take the one without taste!!! I can't stress that enough, it smells and tastes horrible.

                        Re: Do vitamins really work??

Well, I'm not an MD yet, but I am a 3rd year med student. So take my advice with a grain of salt

Fish oil is cardioprotective due to the omega 3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that they can actually help reduce the amount of "clogging" in your arteries. That's why cultures that have diets rich in fish (scandinavian, etc.) have a very low rate of heart disease. That said, I don't know if there are studies that clearly show a benefit in humans. I take fish oil a few times a week though.

As for multivitamins, strictly speaking, they're probably not neccesary if you eat a healthy, complete varied diet. Still, there is really no harm in taking a multivitamin like centrum daily. The ones you may want to avoid are the super high doses of a single vitamin, but even then, you're probably gonna be fine. Do vitamins work? Depends on what research you read. Some will say there is benefit, others will not.

If you're into nutrition you may wanna add some soluble fiber in your diet. It is virtually impossible to get your reccomended daily value eating a typical american diet. Low dietary fiber intake can contribute to colon cancer and a condition called diverticulosis, which is basically where you get little outpouchings of you colon that can get infected. Diverticulosis used to be considered a disease of the elderly (and still is mainly), but its being seen in greater frequency in people as low as their 30's because they never ate fiber. If you get recurrent infections, the current reccomendation is removal of your large colon so its not something to mess around with. Good sources of fiber are beans, nuts, green veggies, and of course drinks like citrucel.

                        Hope it helps

Correct me if Im wrong but I have heard that MOST Multivitamins( Centrum, One a day etc...) are synthetic and your body does not actually absorb the vitamins in the pill. It treats it as a "foriegn object" and it goes straight to your pooper shooter. I heard you have to take vitamns that are taken straight from the source, not man made. Is this true?

I've never heard that, but it is interesting. I'm one who takes Centrum daily. I actually started doing so because I was getting sick too often (I had mono in college and I think my immune system was shot for a while after that). My Dr. is actually the one who told me to start taking Centrum daily.

No, your body will use what it needs (whatever is missing in your normal diet etc.) and the rest comes out in your urine...
