By the way, I might be transferring to UMass as well. -
Re: Transferring colleges
LOL. You have to understand that they have thousands of applicants, dude.Transferring is a lot of work and it takes perfect timing. I failed at my attempt to transfer from DePaul to a school in NC. The school I applied to around here didn't understand that I was on a tight time table, and consequently I removed myself from DePaul hoping to get into a school down here in time.Comment

Why did you go to a school that didn't have the major you wanted to be in?Comment

Re: Transferring colleges
The UMass school of business, especially if you get into the honors program, is pretty damn good, just fyi. The thing is...most education programs are the same. They'll get you certified, and at least this way I'll automatically be certified to teach in Mass, rather than getting a RI liscense and then having to take another test to get a teaching liscense in MA.Wow Longhorn, thats so weird, I'm almost in the exact same boat as you.
I'm in my second year at Maryland, and last semester I started considering transferring to UMass Amherst, but decided not to. But over winter break, as I chilled with my old friends and everything and got used to living back home, its hard for me to want to go back.
There are a few factors that I'm considering. Mostly I just want to be closer to home, and Amherst is only an hour and a half from Boston. Plus I'd save my parents a ton of money, cuz I'd most likely get a big scholorship from them considering I had one available coming out of highschool but elected for Maryland.
The thing about Maryland is, its hard to explain, but I feel kind of trapped in the campus. Ya the frat parties are ok, but at some point they get repetitive seeing as how I'm not in a frat and I dont think they are for me anyway. I'm the type of person that needs a lot of different scenery in my life, and I certainly dont get that at Maryland as its the same stuff over and over again.
I'd have a lot more freedom at UMass, as I'd prob get a car if I went there and could go back and forth between there and Boston often. Also, I have a real estate license in the state of MA so I could do that on the side of school and make a lot of money. I feel like I could be a lot more productive in my home surroundings overall.
Also if I went to UMass I'd room with my 2 best friends which would be sweet, we'd just get kegs in there all the time.
But the bottom line I have to consider is the education. Maryland has a top business school in the country. Although I'd be in the honors program at UMass, I'm not sure how good the degree is in comparison to UMD.
Well, who knows, I wonder if I'll see u at Umass next semester longhorn
Heh...we could have an OS party there, lol.Comment

Re: Transferring colleges
Well, ignoring the reasoning and everything (although I was in a similar position when I was at U of South Carolina), you basically have to make sure that you meet all the deadlines and you have to make sure that both schools cooperate and all your stuff gets transferred over as much as possible. For your situation, I'd definately say stick it out til the end of the semester. I was fortunate enough that Kent State was pretty understanding with students' situations sometimes and they don't make you apply 6 months ahead, but every school is different, so you just have to know what you're dealing withComment

Re: Transferring colleges
You only go through college once so in my opinion your main goal should be to just be happy. If that means having more fun while maybe getting a slightly "worse" education then so be it.
If you aren't happy your grades are likely to slip anyway. Theres no harm in taking a semester off and making sure you know what you really want to do with yourself. Better to be a semester late to the party then getting 2 years deep into school and realizing you screwed up.
Exactly. Most "party" schools will give you a decent education. College is the best time of your life. If you're not having fun, a change of scenery is probably needed.Twitter

Re: Transferring colleges
Yeah, I got all the deadlines figured out...have to apply by April 15th, but I'm headed home this weekend to sit down with my parents, talk everything out. Then next week, I'll contact UMass to talk, and get that part out of the way, talk to the dead here and get that squared away, then request the transcipt be sent and start filling out the app.
Should be an interesting couple of weeks. I am staying the rest of the semester here, and I'm going to do my best to have as much fun as I can, while studying harder than I did first semester to get my grades up a little more. - I finished with a 3.21 first semester, which should get me into UMass, when couipled with my HS marks and test scores that got me into UMass when I applied before. Plus, they accept 70% of the transfer students, and unlike a lot that probably transfer in...I'm not transferring because I'm failing out of another college.
And for the whole 'worse' education part of the thing...UMass has one of the best schools of education in the Northeast, as well as an integrated 5-year masters which is a HUGE perk, since Providence doesn't offer masters.Comment

Re: Transferring colleges
Is there a certain GPA that UMass requires for transfers? I had a 2.85 my first semester. However, I took some college classes in highschool(that I basically blew off), and it took my GPA down to a 2.45.Comment
