Same thing happened to me, except I only needed the 2 bottom ones taken out. The top ones came in fine and I don't have to get them taken out.

Just see if they're putting you in Twilight Sleep. Technically you aren't knocked out, but trust me, you're out. You won't feel or remember a thing. If it's just novacaine then I'd seek a second opinion.

I think most everyone who gets their wisdom teeth removed nowadays is put into Twilight Sleep as it's cheaper and there is less risk involved.

I woke up in the middle of it...I remember waking up to hear a drill whirring in my mouth while surrounded by 3-4 people and one of the people in there saying "It looks like he woke up". They knocked me out again (or twilight sleep - whatever - I wasn't awake). When I woke up I was out of it and just kept saying "What went wrong...What went wrong?" The worst part about it for me was definitely that I woke up and thought that something had gone really wrong. Apparently mine were tougher to get out than they expected and as a result took longer.

And to back up the comment on the pain pills - I stayed on the Percocets (sp?) for just one day. It gives you a high, but made me really unsteady on my feet. Try and get off that stuff ASAP.

Novocaine for wisdom tooth extraction? Christ, is your dentist trapped in the Middle Ages?

Get knocked out, especially if you're getting all four removed. Period.

Couldn't agree more. I took two of those things, and that was enough. Otherwise, it was Advil and ice chips after I got all four of mine removed. I don't like to take anything stronger than Advil, regardless of the pain.

And trust me, it hurts like a mofo the day after, especially if you get all four out and they're deep. Sorry if that scares you, but there's no sense in tap dancing around reality.

Am I the only one who didn't get knocked out for this? All I took was a shot or two of novocaine, and then they strapped a mask over my face with flowing laughing gas.

I never felt any pain throughout the entire surgery. Even the next day I was fine. Just take the pills they give you and you should be fine. However, I do not remember how bad my wisdom teeth were coming in. They might have been easier to get out than yours.

But to be honest, just do whatever you feel comfortable with. No one here knows how much pain you can handle, or your preferences for being awake or knocked out. Just think about how you want to go about it, and come to a conclusion.

I was knocked out when they pulled all 4 of mine 3 years ago.

I think it depends on if your wisdom teeth have actually broken the skin or not. None of mine were showing when I had them removed, were yours showing?

Personally, my bottom teeth are partially impacted (so they broke the skin). The bottom teeth aren't really the problem, it's the top ones. He said that rarely he sees the top ones as the problem but in this case they are. Fully compacted and at 45 degree angles. Then he says "and I won't put you out either"...so thats why I'm a little nervous. He says how difficult it'll be but then he says that he won't put me under. I think i'll call and talk to somebody today.

I think my bottoms had started to show a bit, not so sure on my tops. I had them removed 3 years ago.

Well I'd suggest, if this guy is a dentist, to go see an oral surgeon that is covered under your insurance. My dentist/orthodontist sent me to an oral surgeon for mine.

Also the oral surgeon may think differently from the dentist. My dentist told me I would have to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out. When I went to the oral surgeon he said he only needed to take out the bottom 2 and left the top 2 in since they came in fine.

Yeah I woke up in the middle of mine to, I mean I was out of it still so wasn't feeling any pain or anything but they had to knock me out again, twilight sleep I guess is what it was. Mine were coming in weird, like my bottom ones were coming in horizontally rather than vertically, so they were growing towards my back teeth rather than coming up like they should. Top ones weren't bad though but they still took them out.

I got vicodin for mine, it definitely helped, I was in no pain except for the one time I overslept my pain meds, I woke up and that was not pleasant at all, talk about pain.

                                Re: Wisdom Teeth/Dentist Question

I had 2 of my wisdom teeth removed years ago and at first I went to the dentist to have them removed with freezing but he could not get them out as he said this is was the first time this had happened to him so I needed to get a oral surgeon to remove them but because it was a late Friday afternoon he was unavailable. So I was sent home with a bruised face with painkillers and partial stitching until the following Monday where I was put under and had them removed but the surgeon told me after that he could have taken out 4 wisdom teeth in the time it took to take my 2 and said my teeth were extremely strong. I guess everybody's situation is different as their are a number of factors that determine if it will go smoothly or not.
