The Beatles'll do that to ya.

Not a song but rather a whole album. Now granted it didn't totally change my outlook on life but it blew me away so much on the first listen that I just sat on the floor (I was reading something while listening to it) for a good half hour just astonished at it all.

That would be Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON album. I knew the album's themes and message are even stronger today then they were in '71 but hearing it all for the first time and in full context just floored me. The way the music flowed and how some of the songs just flowed together was pure magic.

It inspired me so much that I used that album as the basis for a paper in my HS religion class!

Re: ever have a song change your outlook?

Not really "changed my outlook," but the song in the Hercules cartoon Go The Distance was always the song that inspired me to... well... "go the distance." It's not really in the lyrics, but it's just in the song and the way it's sung, etc. I don't know, I just always liked it. Anyway, here are those lyrics if you really need them.

        I have often dreamed
        Of a far-off place
        Where a great warm welcome
        Will be waiting for me
        Where the crowds will cheer
        When they see my face
        And a voice keeps saying
This is where I'm meant to be

        I will find my way
        I can go the distance
        I'll be there someday
        If I can be strong
        I know ev'ry mile
        Will be worth my while
        I would go most anywhere
        to feel like I belong

        I am on my way
        I can go the distance
        I don't care how far
        Somehow I'll be strong
        I know ev'ry mile
        Will be worth my while
        I would go most anywhere
        to find where I belong

However, my best friend's death really changed my outlook on life in general. When he died, there were, are, and always will be two songs that remind me of his untimely death (and the turning point in my overall view of life, respect, etc.): Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton and Forever Young by Rod Stewart. So, those songs didn't necessarily change anything, but they remind me of the man and the event that did.

You know, now that I think about it, there really are various songs and artist that really made me think. Marvin is still one of my favorite artist because his music feels so pure. It depends on the mood I'm in. I don't listen to Rap, R&B, Soul, POP or any other type of music now because it does a lot to your emotions. I know when I was younger, I listened to a lot of Marvin, D`Angelo, Erykah Badu and other things along that line. Listened to it more than I did anything else. It helped me to get through a lot of rough days and nights. Music is a strong friend that can do a lot for you (negatively or positively). Listening to some of those old 50s, 60s and 70s joints really does make me remember more golden days. Beetles are some straight up singers. Boy, it's amazing how the music industry has evolved.......

This is a great song by Richard Marx. He wrote it after his father died, and I think of my dad when I hear it. The last 1:30 of the song is just instraments, and his voice just crying out. For me, it's very emotional.

            The Other Side
            Everyone, even those I love
Say that I must move on
It’s time to pick the pieces up
            What’s done is done
            What’s gone is gone
And I, I know they mean me well
But I’m not buying what they sell

            Chorus:
            I can see your face
            In every shooting star
            Can you feel my pain
            From where you are?
I really wanna know was it worth the ride?
And will you be waitin’ on the other side?
            The other side

            I’ve been a soul adrift
Without you here to steady me
And I still listen for your voice
            Through the anger and insanity
And I’m desperate for your help
Oh I look for it in myself

            Chorus:
            I can see your face
            In every shooting star
            Can you feel my pain
            From where you are?
And I really wanna know was it worth the ride?
And will you be waitin’ on the other side?
            The other side

And I, I’m desperate for your help
Oh I, I find it in myself

            Chorus:
            I can see your face
            In every shooting star
            Can you taste my tears
            Ah, from where you are?
And I really wanna know was it worth the ride?
And will you be waitin’ on the other side?
            The other side
