I got a pure breed German Shepherd female from the animal shelter last week. Came fixed with her shots. They estimate she is a little older than 2 from her teeth. She is black and tan and weighs about 85 lbs.

She was found in a field...adopted the next week...then brought back the next day...then I got her two days after that. She is finally settling into my backyard and I just added a doggy door into the garage so her domain just got a lot bigger. She loves the garage...I think she feels safe in there. At first she wasn't eating but I think she was just in shock from all the moving around.

We go on walks and people just move to the other side of the street when they see us coming. She pulls on the leash...which almost knocks me over sometimes...but she starts dog school in two weeks. Free dog school and her first visit to the vet came with the adoption.

I definitely love my doggy. Female English Springer, my parents got her like 5-10 years ago (I would be 9 10 years ago, so yeah it seems right). First day we brought her up north she almost got smoked by a truck. She ran off into the street and just did the "Duck & Cover" maneuver fast enough and the truck went right over the top of her. Scary as all get out for me.

Now she's just lazy and fat though. I fear she takes after me too much.

I have a Rottweiler and people do that all the time to me too. I see people grab their children when they see us.

Congrats on your dog!!! They are great and even if you had a bad day at work, you come home and they are there to greet you. I urge anyone interested in a dog to go adopt.. When we got our dog, We would go to the humane society often and even went to help out on weekends. We got to know the staff and we got the right dog for us. 2 years later I donate on a regular basis even if it's a bag of dog food. I agree about training a dog. Don't punish them when they do something wrong. We got great results by that tactic..

you know what the sad thing is? Pit Bulls get a "bad rap" because of the media..

they really only get that way because people train them to....

I disagree.

Pits get a bad rap because they are what they are -- an aggressive breed. It's not an issue of people training them to be so, it's that very few people train them to not be. There is so much work that needs to go into deprogramming these dogs so they are not the dogs they are portrayed as being. It takes a lot of work to train a normal dog breed so that it can be the perfect dog, but when it comes to pits -- and other aggressive breeds (roddys, dobeys, chows, shepherds, etc.) -- the amount of training needed is tenfold.

All of that is not to say that the "ideal" breeds -- labs, goldens, collies, etc. -- can't be equally as aggressive. But when it comes to those breeds being dangerous, it is far more an issue of the type of breeding done, the upbringing and owners than it is the breed itself.

I did lots of research before getting my dog. The only way to get a pit bull is through a reputable breeder. Same way with Rottweilers (I have a Rott)..........Buying one out of the paper or from just an average person is a big no no. Main reason is if either one of the parents are aggressive, the aggression WILL be passed on to the pups. Regardless of how nice you raise it, it may not even matter. Sadly, it is humans fault for the mess to begin with. These people who think its macho to have an aggressive dog. Only a good breeder breeds these dogs to their true temperament.
