The casein protein. Protein always makes you feel full (ever notice after you eat a steak or beef jerky that you feel full as hell) and casein is a type of protein that your body digests more slowly (as opposed to whey) so it works throughout your 6-9 hours of sleep each night.

Casein is considered a “Slow” protein. When you consume casein, you will reach a peak in blood amino acids and protein synthesis between 3 to 4 hours. However, This ‘peak’ does not even come close to that of whey. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest or fastest, Whey would be a 10. Casein would come in with a meager rating of 2. But, here is the kicker. That is not a bad thing! This, too, is a good thing. Casein dramatically slows the rate of protein breakdown. Remember, Muscle growth is dependant on the balance of protein synthesis and breakdown. So as we can see here, relying on one or the other, and debating which is superior is futile in the hopes to gain the most benefits from them. To tip the scale in your favor, you need to increase protein synthesis and slow down muscle breakdown. You would be a fool to write one off.

Most people find the stuff kinda nasty, so you might want to eat it with an apple or some crackers or something. Carbs aren't the greatest thing to have late at night, but judging by your height and weight it shouldn't be a big concern for you if you have some fruit late at night.

This has been going on for a few years and I cannot seem to kick the habit. Its not every night, but at least 5 nights a week I will wake up almost exactly at 3am and feel like im absolutly starving. I usually go down stairs have a bowl of cerial or a handful of cookies and go back to bed, but I really want to stop this as im trying to get a six pack.

Ive tried changing up my dinner patterns from eating an early dinner with a late snack, to eating full late dinners and to even having something small right before I go to bed, but it just doesnt work. It never fails that I wake up around 3oclock feeling like I havent eaten in a week. This happens on days I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, days I skip breakfast, days I have huge dinners, small dinner, I really cannot find a pattern. Ive also tried substituting food with drinking a glass of water when I wake up, but it just doesnt fill that hunger void and it prevents me from falling back asleep.

Im 5'8 and only 155lbs, but I know this isnt helping me shed the little bit of baby fat im trying to get rid of.
Don't eat anything after 7pm at night. If you wake up hungry, just drink about 20 ounces of water. Your stomach will be full. Your stomach won't immediately realize its not food, only that it has the full sensation. Go back to bed. You should wake up around 7am having to pee like a race horse, but thats alright, perfect time to start the day.

You can just buy a tub of casein powder in any flavor, those taste fine to me when mixed with water. Most 5lb containers have 77 servings and cost about $25-$35 online. That's about two months worth of good sleeping for $25.

Also, is there a website with healthy meals and which time to eat them?

Thanks guys, this site is THE BEST... shall be donating soon, finally got a credit card lol

Well what time you stop eating depends on what time you go to bed. I believe you are not supposed to eat anything within 2 or 3 hours before going to bed, because then it will just be stored as fat.

My friend is like 5' 7" and pretty stalky. Hes not fat really though. He lost 15 pounds in about a month by not eating candy, fast food, and soda. He excercises some and does pushups and situps fairly often.

That's a myth, it all depends on what you eat.

Exactly. Nobody should eat after 5:00 if all they eat is candy and ice cream.

pf03ho, diet is essential to getting a six-pack. There's been lots of good tips within this thread to help out.
Cut back carbs, add more protein, drink lots of water and exercise.
It's not a coincidence that you had a 6-pack while working construction. You were probably sweating like a dog and eating a sensible lunch every day.

I knew a guy that had a six pack and the only thing he did was count calories and watch his carb consumption. He hardly did any crunches.

ehh, I've been looking to purchase that book "New Rules of Lifting". You seem very high on it. Is it good for someone that's been lifting for a few years now?
