Been going to the US a lot lately...

With the Canadian dollar so high, and prices in the states so low, Ive been doing a lot of shopping in the good old USofA recently.

In terms of clothing, Ive noticed that things are ALOT cheaper in the States. Hollister, Hugo Boss, Abercrombie, Diesel--EVERY article of clothing seems to be cheaper. I bought a pair of Lacoste shoes yesterday for $72 USD. The week before, I was in Toronto (around my area, only the Toronto-area has Lacoste stores) and the SAME shoes were 195CDN... thats a HUGE difference.

I spent 200USD yesterday on clothing alone, but what I bought would easily be over 500-600CDN. Another big plus is the tax in NY-at 6%, compared to 14% in Ontario.

Anyways, I soon will be upping my purchases. Im buying a Macbook Pro in the US. Its 200$ cheaper, but with our dollar so high and the tax difference, I'll actually be saving about 300CDN.

Heres my question though: It appears games, systems, computers, movies, etc, are a lot cheaper in the States. The only stores I know in the Buffalo areas (Erie, Cheektawonga, etc) are Bestbuy and Target. Should I be looking for another store that's even cheaper?

Oh man, cant wait until I move to California!!!

PS: Your food is VERY expensive. I saw a watermelon for 6.99USD--its 2.99CDN. All your food and groceries are generally 2-4 dollars extra--incredible

If you plan on moving to California you will not be saving that much. California is one of the most expensive states in the U.S. to live in.

Move to Mississippi. Our cost of living is so low.

Well. Considering fruits and veggies are grown there, I doubt that is too expensive. Meat too--alotta cattle and pork farms there.

Clothing I heard isnt thaaaat expensive just because so many stores offer such differentiation (ie: in NY, sooooo many stores offer lacoste--in Ontario, I would argue less than 15). Just that sorta deal.

Also, I was VERY surprised to see that grocery stores offer alcohol--very european lol

Ive actually heard good things about Missi--except for the weather. Possible tornadoes, floods being prevelent, etc. But I like the country feel to it.

Thats the thing with Canada and the State--One can say they're Canadian or American, but the nations are soooo large, we know how 1% of the population lives..its weird.

Im going to be a teacher. Moving to Aussie for a year for Teacher's College, and then want to teach in the states--but still have to figure out how to go about doing so. Would LOVE it tho.

I dislike American foreign politics, but the people are great. Plus, the weather is the South is alot nicer

That shouldn't make much difference. However, I think what he was referring to was the overall cost of living. California is higher than most other states (ie: a large house in Pittsburgh that goes for $400,000 will be in the $1.5 or so million range in some areas of California).

I'm sure the California guys could speak of it better, but I do know it's one of the more expensive states in the US to live.

Ah, gotcha. I tend to think of C.O.L as in, the everyday needs, not a house.

Very true though. Houses in the US are VERY expensive.

Where Im from, a 2,000 sq ft house is about 350,000K. In LA or San Diego, its over 2M, or so I hear... crazy

I hate canada, but love the fish there!

Which lake? But ya, CDN beer is expensive-prolly because, unlike in the US, the canadian govt has a monopoly on who can sell it

Cost of living here is very high. Of course it depends on where you live within the state (urban vs. rural vs. suburban etc.). Also our fresh fruit and vegetables are actually pretty cheap compared to the rest of the country. Especially if you go to a Farmer's Market or another type of fresh produce stand.

Depends on the part of California. Anywhere near the coast is going to be expensive.

We bought a 2800 sq ft. house on a 1/4 acre lot about 2 1/2 years ago and paid $1.3 Million.

The market has begun to even out here in San Diego, except along the coastline. Prices continue to steadily climb along the coast, although not at the rate they were climbing just 15 or 16 months ago.

Luckily there is quite a bit of inflated pay out there as well to help compensate.
