Losing a pet. Man does it suck.

My dog got loose this morning for what seemed like the 30th time in her life. Usually she just wandered around the backyard or the neighbors yard, but this time we weren't so fortunate.

She gets loose at least once a year, and it usually takes 20 minutes to find her. However today, she got loose and no one could find her. At about noon we got a phone call from the Humane Society saying she had been hit by a car and to come and identify her. That was quite possibly the worst phone call I have ever taken.

We got to the Humane Society, and sure enough, there she was. I honestly felt like crying my eyes out, but I'm a man and waited 'till I got home. She was quite possibly the best friend I ever had. She was the first pet I ever had(a dog and cat), and I'm devastated that she's gone. We got her when she was about 6months old, when I was just entering kindergarten. She was old[14], but she still had at least two more years on her.

It's horrible losing a pet so suddenly. I never even got to say goodbye. Life honestly won't be the same.

Man, I know how you feel. Well, I lost my dog when I was two, but right now we have a guinea pig. While you're probably laughing right now, let me be the first to tell you that you wouldn't know how much you would love one until you own one. Honestly, she has various actions like a dog at times, and she is just the most adorable thing. The biggest reason for wanting to feel so secure for her is: she's at the bottom of the food chain, she is so tiny and fragile, and guinea pigs don't really have a good sense of awareness (for example, if you were to put her on top of a table or counter, she wouldn't know not to walk off the edge).

Earlier this year, she had abscess under her mouth... and like I said, they are very fragile. We could have given her surgery, where it would be 50% likely that they could actually remove it, and another 25% that she would even survive the surgery. So, we had to open, staple, and thread her chin area and "cleanse" it twice every day, we had to put her on antibodies, and we had to syringe-feed her because it was too painful for her to eat on her own, etc.

Through all of this, I was afraid that every day she would die. So far, so good. She no longer has abscess, but right now she's sort of in a lazy and depressive mood swing. She's not eating or pooping as much, and she doesn't do some of the things that she used to. The vet warned us of possible impending cancer, perhaps caused by the abscess earlier. I certainly hope this is not the case, though. We've had her for three years, and I just can't see losing her. The toughest part about losing a guinea pig is there is almost no way that you can tell them goodbye or that you love them, and there's really no other way for her to say it back. I assume it would be mighty tough with a dog as well, but with a guinea pig it's just impossible. I hope we never have to put her to sleep or anything.

All this said, I really feel sorry, and actually very sad. The only thing that I hate worse than losing a pet is animal cruelty altogether... it's just the worst thing to ever swallow. That same pet can never be replaced in one's mind; it's just not the same. I hope you get through it, man.

Thanks for the kinds words everybody; I really am going to miss her. Just yesterday we were out at the pool hanging out. It's amazing how things can go from so good to so bad in such a short period of time.

Oh, and to add to a horrible day, I just got home from getting three cavities filled.

By the way, I hope your guinea pig gets better, Blzer. Good luck.

hey DB.. I know the feeling.. had to put my "bud" Boomer down a few months back.. He was up there (14) & had troubles walking.. I got the call from my mom at work & balled my eyes out.. It still hurts, as little things at home (dropping food on the floor, for example) makes me think he's still there.. We had him cremated, & will bury him in the backyard some point this summer..

Hang in there DB.. may the happy memories stay with you..

I remember having to put to sleep the cat I had from when I was 2 until 19...man it's tough, they're family, always around...

Just keep your head up, bro, and remember the happy times you had.

I definitely feel your pain man. About two years ago, my 13 year old Lab passed away and it was nearly as bad as losing a family member. Just a few months ago, our other dog got loose, but got home safely fortunately.

Sorry to hear about your loss and I hope things get better for you and your family.

I'm so sorry to hear than Double Eights.

I remember the day my grandparents dog Noah (yellow lab) got hit on the highway. They lived right off a two lane highway and my Papaw was going to the store. Normally the dog was good about not following him down the driveway to the highway but that day was different. My Papaw never saw him and Noah followed him out. Needless to say, he never made it back.

Even though it wasn't my dog, it was still tough because I had spent that summer with them and grew attached.

Once again though man, I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

Losing a dog to a car accident is probably one of the worst ways to lose a pet(not that that any way is good). It's not like a dog with a fatal illness or one with old age who can't function anymore. At least then you know you're running out of time and can say your goodbyes. With a freak accident where a dog gets hit by a car, you have no opportunity to say goodbye nor give them one last hug. One day you are out playing catch, then the next you are confirming if it's your dog or not.

I also have no idea if she suffered or not. They say they found her at 7:40am, but who knows when it actually happened. I just pray that it was instant and she felt no pain.

I lost a dog about 6 years ago to a car accident. I live in a rural area and we have a private road off of the main road that we share with 2 other houses. I was outside at my friends house, which is about 100 yards away, playing on my scooter (I was like 12), when someone was coming down our road. They were going way too fast and I saw my dog near the road. Needless to say there wasn't much I could do.

Losing a pet to an accident is one thing, but witnessing the event is another. It was so hard on me and my entire family. My dad, who didn't really want the dog to begin with, but had become so attached to, probably took it the hardest.

It'll be hard for a while, I know it was for me. However, now that I look back on it, I think it was a blessing in disguise. We now have an amazing dog, which we wouldn't have if Ninja (named him after the Ninja Turtles, I was 4 by the way) had not passed away.

I'm sorry about your lose Eights, its never easy losing a pet, especially this way.
