They started slowly phasing people to become telecommuters or virtual workers about 4-5 years ago because of the cost benefits. The company saves quite a bit by not paying as much in taxes since we work from home and it saves a whole lot by selling off or leasing large office buildings. I think I saw the company saved about $12,000 per employee, per year. (and that was 4 years ago).

They also learned that the diligent workers productivity actually increased as there aren't as many distractions at home (i.e. lack of water cooler talk) and people are more willing to work at odd hours w/o charging the company.

I told him I was going to quit because I could no longer take the commute. He suggested working from home. I've been doing it ever since.
Damn, that won't work for you. My commute is like 50 steps.

This may work, I'll have to talk to my boss once I'm ready to do that.

25 miles - 25 minutes. Luckily I don't have to deal with traffic as I begin work @ 1am. Sometimes I hit traffic on my way home when the rest of the world is on their way to work!

Which would add what an additional, what, 20 seconds? LOL

Depends, parking lot might be far away from the dorm.

I know at Uconn I don't have a car on campus, but if I did it would be at least a 10 minute walk away from my dorm.

                  That's rough.

I remember at UIC the parking lot was right across the street.

Well, it takes me 10-12 minutes to get to the train station, the train itself takes 40 minutes, then I take about a 5 minute bus ride, and then about a 3 minute walk.

                    About an hour.

Ride the Sounder man! I work in Belltown, live in Auburn, and I have rode it all summer. It is awesome. I had to drive in today to the office, because I had one of the company cars. Traffic wasn't too bad, but I came in really early.

Way longer than 20 seconds man... I gotta walk out of my dorm, across the faculty parking lot, cross the road, cross a bridge, then walk down to the parking lot I use... about 10-15 minutes.

Why the hell do you have to park so far away from your dorm?

Kind of defeats the purpose of having one.

Well... there are closer parking lots (not much closer, still across the bridge) but they're always full and the one I go to is never full.

Thing is... Radford is very self contained. It's not a campus that is sprawling and you have to drive to your next hall. It's pretty much compact and stuck all together. Case in point this pic:

15 miles, 20-25 minutes, though it will change to about 5 miles, 10 minutes in a few weeks.

One of my co-workers came in on the 5 this morning at 7 and said it was clear. Though we were speculating in a meeting that the news will say the roads were open this morning and everybody and their brother will drive in tomorrow causing a lot of traffic.
