    Seeking Money/Job Advice

I'm in a bit of trouble. It's not that serious at the moment but I realize that very soon it could be.

I'm currently in film school with basically no time to work. I was set to graduate in October but it is now looking like November/Decemeber because students continue to push their thesis shoot days back. After the students finish shooting we are scheduled to have more classes. Class schedules typically go from 10AM-8PM every day of the week. This is why I have no time to work.

Anyway, I make no money because I don't work. The only money I've had is 401k money that I've had to tap into from when I was working in Jan 2005-Aug 2006. That money is almost gone now. My dad was sometimes helping me out with about 200 bucks a week.

However, my bills are $600 a month.

Now my dad is in a pissy mood with me for personal family reasons. I have my own feelings on how to handle a family situation and my dad, being his typical self, disagrees and therefore is cutting me off.

I could find a job once I'm out of school and that's all fine and dandy but it's not that easy. I know that if I find a job in the business field (and I get offers all the time for 45-60K jobs that I've had to decline) I'll be giving up on film. I know that life and I won't find the time to be creative enough to do film. Plus with set work schedules I couldn't just freelance like I want to.

I need a dead-end job. Seriously. Is there anything like that anymore? It seems that I'm too over qualified for a simple job that could help me pay the bills and not be stressed with extra paper work once I get home. I don't mind living at home for a while. I'm doing it now and oh well if I'm 25 and living with my parents. Call it being stubborn but I refuse to find a safe haven in job security when film is all I'm striving for right now. I can make 60k in a nice business job with a great opportunity to rise in the corporate ladder but I'll be unhappy.

What kind of jobs could I look for that offer flexible schedules and wouldn't turn me down because I'm a college graduate with a business degree (it's happened before)?

I don't need a lot of money right now. I'll seriously take $12,000 a year. I just want to make sure I have the time to freelance on film and write.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions. (Thanks for actually reading too )

    Re: Seeking Money/Job Advice

That's about any retail job. You don't have to write all your qualifications on a resume/job application. There are usually hundreds of retail jobs around cities that are looking for people who a.) are breathing, b.) can be trusted, and c.) will actually show up on the days and times they are supposed too.

I worked my way through college at jobs like Best Buy, Toys R Us (sweetest job ever), and Target...making around $10-$12/hour...which translates to about 20k+ a year working full time. The good thing is you can work part time, set your own schedules (because they are open 18 hours a day they often need morning, swing, night), and when you leave for the day you don't have to worry about anything else. Overqualified...yes. Boring...some of the time. But it covers the bills and gives you the free time to pursue your other interests.

Life is too short to be unhappy doing a job you don't want to do. I majored in economics/accounting in college but towards the end hated the idea of sitting in an office every day counting beans. I love my career...I don't even think of it as work...and look forward to going ever night.

I once tried with Blockbuster and the degree scared them off. I figure I could try again and not even mention the degree.

Seems like most people that work there (that I know either online or personally) enjoy it there for the most part.

Do these retail outlets (Best Buy, Target, Toys R Us, Circuit City for example) do hardcore checks on people? I was worried that if I fail to mention my degree that they'll find out I have one and then that would hurt my chances because I'd be untrustworthy.

And what do you do now that you enjoy so much?

      Thanks.

as a general manager of a pizza restaurant i'd take you. i could care less about being overqualified. if you have a car and can deliver, that's great money, espically around a campus. restaurants are always looking for help, and as long as you don't ask for a ton of money, we'll usually hire you. if worst comes to worst, don't lat any employer know about your degree. just let them know your a college student.

Do what actors and actresses do before they hit it big. Wait tables. Good money, tips = cash, and usually you can work out a flexible schedule. $600 a month is childs play, you could get a part time gig and make that.

I would go to a retail outlet and talk to the manager who does the hiring. Explain that you are in school and need to work, but can only work so many hours. Most of these guys would kill for someone that isn't an idiot and actually wants to work. Give them a time frame for how long you would like to work there, 6 months+ would be a big plus as kids make some money and quit. If you actually are able to talk to someone, then the degree would probably be a big plus.

In college, I worked full-time in the summers and one job I told them I would only be able to work for 3 months and I needed a week off for some volunteer work I did. They had no problem hiring me and they even transferred me later during the semester.

I really doubt they will do a hardcore check on you. They will run a small background/and drug test...but I'm not even sure if there is a check that will give education. That is something you usually have to prove with a degree. Just tell them you are in school and looking for flexible hours and give them a list of days you can work.

As for now I'm a police officer in Vegas for the LVMPD. It's a perfect job for me and I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else. Find what you love and you never have to work a day in your life...so true...so true! Best of luck with the job hunt.

My weakness in life...pizza. In college my room mate worked at Pizza Hut and used to bring 3-5 pizza's home every night. We'd eat 2 of them and sell the other ones to other starving dorm kids. After all that pizza I still love it.

Every night...pizza, Goldeneye on N64, and then the girl next door over sneaking by to "tuck me in". Those were the days my friend...those were the days...

I agree with BK... waiting tables sounds right.

I do agree with you on the degree though... I got denied for a job because of having too much knowledge. Not those exact words but same meaning.

I could also tell that off the start in the interview that the person interviewing me was actually intimidated.

                    Thanks all.

Waiting tables sounds like a really good idea especially since I would imagine that work would be evening/night. And being that I'm more of a morning person (workout, writing, planning) it would open up the early day for me to do that.

I'll also check-in with retail outlets and see how that goes.

I'm feeling much better now. I really appreciate the advice and thoughts.

Wow, it's great to see one of these threads keep a mature theme and for the OP to get the advice he wanted. Good luck with film school, I can definitely sympathize with being in school with no money right now.

When I was between jobs I delivered newspapers in the early morning to get by. A 250 home route was good for about $300 a week.

That had to be kind of rough... sometimes I hear the guy delivering papers around here at like 4AM. Early... but hey at least there is no traffic.

do you have any accounting classes? you could get a job doing entry level accounting clerk/payroll stuff. Keep it simple and part time and that would give you the time you need free, plus pay your bills.

                            These jobs are everywhere.

I was going to deliver papers for USA Today but I would've had to be up and delivering at 3 in the morning on the same days that I had classes.
