Why you don't play with collectibles as a kid...

So I used to be a huge NASCAR fan in my early years (4-11), and I used to like collecting the little diecast cars. My grandmother bought me tons and tons of cars. I remember having a 4 or 5 foot tall revolving display case that was filled with them. I would always want to open them and my grandmother would always tell me "don't open that, you'll regret it when you're older and they're worth money". Man, was she right.

I went up to my attic today because I was contemplating selling the stuff, and I find 4 plastic tubs full of cars and other stuff, and it turns out some of the stuff is going to net me a lot of money. Here are some of the values I got just by searching Ebay for them:

    Car 1: $94
    Car 2: $38
    Car 3: $20
    Car 4: $25
    Car 5: $50

Keep in mind pretty much all of those cars were bought for under 10 dollars. Part of me wants to sell them, but another part of me wants to keep them, considering they are a big part of my past. This is still pretty damn good news, and is a reminder to all children wanting to play with these things and parents that buy their children these things, to keep them in the box.

    Sell them.

You won't care about them in a few years, and could probably use a few hundred dollars right now.

That's only $227. Not that much.

I'd rather have had the fun playing with them when I was a kid.

That's exactly why I want to sell them.

That's only five of the cars though. I have hundreds, many of them limited edition.

keep them. they will probably be worth more in time. Besides, if you sell them you will blow the money and have nothing to show for. Then you will regret it.

I hardly believe mini-cars in a display case is a part of your past that you want to keep. Did you have a really good time just looking at them, pretending what kind of fun you could have had playing with them?

Sell em man... that's a lot of money.

Keeping them in the box is stupid in my opinion, if you're a little kid. Let kids have their fun.

I have a bunch of NASCAR diecast cars from the 1990s when I was a kid as well. I never thought that they could be worth some money. I have some cars that do not exist anymore (Jeff Gordon's Rainbow pain scheme, several drivers such as Rusty Wallace that are retired, some limited editions, Adam Petty's car and as you may know, he died in a crash). The problem is, many of them are scratched from my constant playing with them.

Well, my grandmother would by me two of each, one that I would play with, and the other would be unopened and kept in the box. They're all part of my past. Not to get corny or anything, but I remember when I would go to Wal-Mart with my gram and go down the toy aisle, and she would buy me a new one every time we went. I remember I used to "race" the ones that they would let me play with. It was a really big part of my childhood, believe it or not.

I forgot to mention that I also found the following baseball cards in my attic:

                        Sammy Sosa rookie
                        2 Mike Mussina rookies
                        Ivan Rodriguez rookie
                        Chipper Jones rookie
                        Jim Edmonds rookie
                        Javy Lopez rookie

Hopefully they can net me something too.

Anyway, just to give people the idea of how much stuff there is...here is a picture:

By my count, 35 1:64 scale cars (the little ones), a 1:87 scale hauler, two 1:24 scale cars, and a 1:64 scale train set with two cars (the red Jeff Gordon box in the back).

I did a lot of research and checked the value of the cars, just so I don't get ripped off when/if I sell them.

I've seen the train set's value anywhere from $90-$100. The car in the small purple box on the left is apparently worth around $90. The whole row on the far right is Jeff Gordon, and all of them are worth at least $10, some over $20. I also have a lot of Dale Earnhardt cars which are all over $20. All of this stuff is going to add up to at least $500, possibly more, and with the stuff still up in my attic, I might even get to $1000 if I'm lucky. It's hard to say no to selling when I could get that much.
